Eating out in York recommendations

Hoping someone can help with recommending a nice place to eat in York. Looking to book a nice quirky restaurant for an evening meal. It needs to be able to cater to a range of dietary requirements and it would be really great if it was typical York olde world , beams, cracked plaster, ghosts etc

Trembling madness- but you can’t book in advance.

Looks good, nice food and ghosts, shame you can't book 😔

What sort of budget, op?

Pootles34 · 19/02/2025 13:46

Whippet Inn is excellent, definitely quirky! York Minster Refectory is definitely on our list too.

Ye Olde Star Inn it's the oldest pub in York.

Nola is lovely. Small plates. Excellent service. The food is really good.
They also have live jazz on certain nights.

I know it's a chain restaurant so maybe not what you are after - Ask Italian is set in the Assembly Rooms which is an impressive, historic building and we enjoyed a meal there with our DC.

Thanks all great suggestions. Not a huge budget around 25 per head without drinks

There's a place near the Jorvik museum called La Rustique. Only been once but it was brilliant

Sheggsie · 19/02/2025 17:55

The Whippet Inn fits your criteria…

Love The Whippet Inn!

Ah whippet will be more than that. I would probably suggest a pub then for olde Yorke Ness - maybe guy Fawkes? Or the fleece inn but I've not eaten there. Rustique is excellent on a budget but not really quirky or old I don't think?

Thanks all really great options here

Although Rustique isn't typically York, it is absolutely lovely and has a really well priced set menu where you still have loads of choice. Think it's available on Saturdays as well until about 6.30, we've been a few times and never been disappointed.

Have added the whippet inn to my own list it looks amazing!
