Why is a lady on my train setting her hair on fire?

She's sat with a lighter setting the ends of her long hair on fire, then putting it out. No idea why, is this a thing? The whole train stinks if burnt hair and I have exchanged puzzled looks with several other passengers.

Sealing split ends? I vaguely remember this from the school bus in high school.

WartOrNot · 18/02/2025 09:32

Surely it's a non-smoking train?

How very British not to speak up!

split ends used to be a way of getting rid of them not a good way though

PoltergeistsStartLowKey · 18/02/2025 09:32

I would say a MH issue.

Do it - fine.

Do it on a train - not fine.

Have a word with the train manager. It's a fire risk.

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 18/02/2025 09:33

Well even if that is a thing for sealing hair it’s pretty rude to do it in public

RitaFromTheRanch · 18/02/2025 09:33

Ask her

mommyfinger · 18/02/2025 09:34

Is it braids ?

NewHeaven · 18/02/2025 09:48

Report her to the train manager as a fire risk
What happens if she sets herself on fire?

Oh god yes we did this just as we were lighting up our Regal kingsize !

TheOccupier · 18/02/2025 09:50

Jeez. Pull the alarm at the next station!

Highlighta · 18/02/2025 09:51

Geez that is a bit of a risky way to sort out split ends.

I say this as someone whose hair set fire (accidently) when I leaned across the table and the candle set my hair on fire. It was not a pretty scene.

DO NOT PULL THE ALARM

Do something!! Before you are asking mn how to extinguish a blazing woman.. There is a text service I believe to report stuff on trains. Or go to the buffet carriage /first class and find someone...

Now that would be very British - AIBU to ask how we extinguish a woman who's on fire on the Kings Cross to Liverpool train 😂

ConflictofInterest · 18/02/2025 09:57

Text 61016 British transport police before she sets herself or the carriage on fire

CocoPlum · 18/02/2025 09:59

WheneverI'm on trains we get the announcement of "if you see something that doesn't look right, text the British transport police". Google that number and text them.

TrainTicket · 18/02/2025 09:59

If she’s doing it because she’s unstable she could start setting fire to other things. I think I would report it to someone working on the train. Leave your seat quietly and find someone rather than calling them over.

BabyDream2025 · 18/02/2025 09:59

Alert somebody. She could be sorting her split ends but it’s not normal behaviour. Especially not on a busy train.

TokyoSushi · 18/02/2025 10:00

Is she still doing it? Are you on a long distance train or somewhere where she'll get off in a minute? Agree texting British Transport Police is a good idea, see it, say it, sorted, or is it sort it and all that...

Lettucelet · 18/02/2025 10:01

Any updates OP?

Floppyelf · 18/02/2025 10:05

61016 see it say it sort it

MaisieMacabe · 18/02/2025 10:07

She may be sealing the ends of her braids to stop them unravelling. I once caught my daughter doing that and had a panic! She ought not to do it on a train.

MerryOliveFinch · 18/02/2025 10:08

Pretty sure this would come under Health and Safety. You should have reported her immediately.

That happened to me one too! Nice to know I’m not the only one 😁
