Why is a lady on my train setting her hair on fire?

She's sat with a lighter setting the ends of her long hair on fire, then putting it out. No idea why, is this a thing? The whole train stinks if burnt hair and I have exchanged puzzled looks with several other passengers.

Split ends! I remember the obsession with them! I would cut them out.

In the 80's, when every girl's hair was set solid with hairspray, my mates hair caught light when a boy used a cigarette lighter close to it. It went up like WHOOSH due to all the hairspray.

Report it. Burnt hair is vile smelling & as others have mentioned it's a fire risk

Zebedee999 · 18/02/2025 14:57

Breathing in burnt hair can make you very ill. Years ago a cruel trick was to put a strand of hair in someones tobacco.

Even if she’s not mentally ill, this is really not on.

Burning hair stinks as well. Yuck.

I would say a MH issue.

Do it - fine.

Do it on a train - not fine.

Have a word with the train manager. It's a fire risk.

Totally agree. Very sad, but well out of order.

she might have a synthetic weave/ wig sometimes they do this on the hair to bond the ends and stop the style from unraveling LOL

Geez that is a bit of a risky way to sort out split ends.

I say this as someone whose hair set fire (accidently) when I leaned across the table and the candle set my hair on fire. It was not a pretty scene.

I did that once when trying to light incense sticks.

LaughingCat · 19/02/2025 23:13

Yeah, we used to do this with our lighters in high school, back in the 90s to seal our split ends. Total school bus vibes.

How old is she? I’d be surprised if she was doing it for that reason nowadays - we didn’t have YouTube and it’s eleventy billion videos giving us step by step routines on how to keep your hair glossy and healthy…which should never include burning it 😂

Oh Lord, yes! Been there, done that. 🙄😫

Have you ever seen a 'train manager' on a train?

I've not.

There may be a guard but finding him on an intercity train will be tricky.

I’m probably a bit late to be commenting and I bet someone else has said it but there is a train manager on every single Great Western train I get from London Paddington.
I interact with them because I am a wheelchair user and they come to say hello and check I’m okay, plus I need a ramp to get on and off the train and sometimes it is the train manager who has to do that.
I guess most people will hear them make their announcements even if they don’t actually see them.
probably no train managers on local trains though.

Now that would be very British - AIBU to ask how we extinguish a woman who's on fire on the Kings Cross to Liverpool train 😂

Trains don’t go from King’s Cross to Liverpool, it’s Euston.😆😆
