My son really didn’t get on with the contacts so you may not have a choice, he has the goggles, ugly things but they do the job. So try to do a practise with the lenses to see if he manages first.

Try contacts first - if s/he gets on with them, s/he'll really appreciate the peripheral vision they'll give her/him.

Thank you - we did the practice today and you are right, it did not go well. DS kept trying to pull up his eyelid and then bailing. The consultant put them in for him in the end and after a few hours DS couldn't bring himself to pull them out! He has a pair at home to practice with. He was v keen initially.

I think the goggles look fabulous, very Mission Impossible, but his eye doctor said much more dangerous than contacts. It was this I was wondering about.

DS has decided to stop playing rugby and to focus on football instead.

It is a shame, really, as so much about the sport is such good fun. Just the danger element which is off putting, not just to do with the eyes but also in the scrambles the possibility of boot spikes near the face, thumps on the head and all sorts.

My Ds started wearing contacts at 12/13 mostly for football, he hated the goggles, he'd been wearing from about age 5 for football. After a few days of trial and error he started wearing them all the time and still does at 19!

It takes a while to become confident with contact lenses .. it’s hard at first that then becomes easy after a while
