Where would you retire to that is picturesque?

Where in the UK would you find a lovely house (preferably detached) with great views to retire to? Views could be rolling hills, sea, river, lake, etc.

A detached house with sufficient land around it. Even better if I'd need to drive a couple of minutes to be able to find a neighbour to have a dispute with.

Are there property sites where there is an option to search for properties with views?

I'd choose Carmathenshire personally. Hauntingly beautiful scenery at every turn and a stunning coastline.

London,

Londoner born and bred who moved out 30+ years ago. Still miss it.

The finest view in England is from the top of Richmond Hill.

FancyNewt · 17/02/2025 18:38

Budget?

KnickerlessParsons · 17/02/2025 18:39

Cotswolds, Gower Peninsula, Pembrokeshire, Lake District

coxesorangepippin · 17/02/2025 18:47

Yeah... Budget?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/02/2025 18:51

I'm not retired, but I live just outside the Lake District National Park and have a view across an estuary to the fells from my house. It's very beautiful, but dear lord the weather is shit! Not sure if we'll move, but if we did I'd fancy Dorset or Devon.

Bitteroldshrew · 17/02/2025 18:54

I wouldn't retire somewhere remote due to challenges of aging.

Shrewsbury - gorgeous town. Easy access to nature but lovely feel.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/02/2025 18:55

This is pretty nice not too far from us- depends what your budget is I guess .

Handy forBath ( 5 miles) but lovely village on doorstep with several gastropubs, 2 lovely cafes, deli, post office , general shop plus 24/7 garage that stocks cook etc , chemist , good bus route

Agree.

Remote and picturesque is fine up to early 70s (depending on health). After that, start thinking of moving near amenities and support before it is too late and before you lose the ability to drive.

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 17/02/2025 19:05

Agree with others, you need to retire to somewhere with nearby amenities and good public transport. You can of course get those things and a nice view if you're rich lucky.

CountryShepherd · 17/02/2025 19:06

View from upstairs, Dorset. Not on the market! Never get tired of it.

100% agree - moved here 4 years ago and love it! I have to travel around rural Shropshire as part of my job and as much as I thought I would always like to live out in the middle of nowhere I hate driving the country lanes, although I will never tire of the views 😍

Grimshadylady · 17/02/2025 19:18

Around £800k but could stretch to £1m.

Less than £800k even better.

This is really nice. I love it. Wouldn't mind a cottage either.

Mull...
Definitely nowhere like it..

Crikeyalmighty · 17/02/2025 19:25

@Grimshadylady will see what I can find you round our neck of the woods as this might be a bit over budget looking at your post - it's a great area for retirement although not cheap - we also have really good medical facilities and connections train , bus and rail and yep some fabulous views in villages on the edge

Londonmummy66 · 17/02/2025 19:25

Swansea end of the Gower - this is in budget https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150048038#/?channel=RES_BUY

Moorfellduck · 17/02/2025 19:26

Somewhere dry, warm and close to good healthcare. Ideally within 30 mins of a good rated hospital. And I'd have a bus or train station within a very easy walk.

Moorfellduck · 17/02/2025 19:26

I think that well and truly rules out Wales for me!

Definitely if you want good healthcare.

wooliegloves · 17/02/2025 19:33

My requirements for retiring are close to good hospital, public transport & high street.

InvisibilityCloakActivated · 17/02/2025 19:52

Orkney? Lovely views and can get some pretty isolated areas!

Ideally, I'd want to be within easy distance of the GP, the dentist, the library, the vet etc and have an attractive townscape to look at. As much as I'd prefer to be on the ground floor, flooding is an issue in many areas, so I'd have to bear that in mind.
