Where would you retire to that is picturesque?

Where in the UK would you find a lovely house (preferably detached) with great views to retire to? Views could be rolling hills, sea, river, lake, etc.

A detached house with sufficient land around it. Even better if I'd need to drive a couple of minutes to be able to find a neighbour to have a dispute with.

Are there property sites where there is an option to search for properties with views?

OP posts:

We live in the North West and after some crappy years of weather - we are looking to retire further south. Where we live is beautiful, there's beaches, glens, beautiful views - but the fucking weather....

Crispynoodle · 18/02/2025 12:51

I am here! In NI

charabang · 18/02/2025 12:52

I always wanted to retire to the Wye Valley. minus the chicken shit in the river.

Ah I've just posted about Herefordshire! I love it here. Several market towns big enough to have amenities without being in Hereford itself as well.

Ooh. I don't wish to make the OP's thread All About Me, but is there anywhere in particular you would recommend? Our budget is somewhat less than OP's, maybe £550/650k.

Lake district. Particular a little village called Silverdale or in nearby Beetham, failing that Kendal

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/02/2025 12:55

Carlingford Lough, I would probably stay on the RoI side but the NI side is just as beautiful.

I don't understand this either. It's not a binary choice between city and middle of nowhere.

Maybe on the edge of a small market town which has some useful facilities and is surrounded by lovely scenery
might be the best of both worlds?

This is what I'd be looking for. I wouldn't ever want to live in a big city again. Might consider a very small one.

I agree. But there's plenty of places around here (West Yorkshire) where there's pockets of isolated countryside that are under 30 mins public transport/drive from major cities. I walk a lot and find isolated houses all over the place that would suit.

Just a general search that includes many that don't fit the brief but there's likely to be something suitable here

I'd also think the North York Moors would suit. You don't have to go far from York, Hull or Scarborough to feel like you're in total wilderness

Id love to retire to Porlock or Porlock Weir in Somerset. I live in Glastonbury but realistically all my friends live in Glastonbury and although there are facilities there it's still very remote up on Exmoor and impossible to go anywhere without a car. So I doubt I will.

No plans on moving when we retire!
We never got a bigger house, do our moderate 3 bed might feel roomy again if the reeves ever leave.
I like my views, my village, my countryside. GP 2 mins walk away. 3 hospitals in half an hour drive.

DeepFatFried · 18/02/2025 13:32

My parents moved to a coastal / rural area, a village, for retirement. It was great while they were fit and active retirees, and a nightmare , a serious health and safety threatening nightmare, once they were frail and needed help. Not to mention the very heavy burden it placed on me and siblings. The long drive, the lack of public transport. The sparse taxi service. The lack of nearby visiting carers.

My family live semi rural.

I don’t think it suits anyone unless you are a farmer or are prepared to drive everywhere, not have shops within walking distance, hardly socialise, be alone once one if you died (probably run down walking in a pavement and verge free lane) . It ties families and parents to being a taxi service, restricts young people’s independence (lack of public transport / safe cycling roads / teen boy racers driving at 17 because of the aforementioned, etc.

I get dreaming about peace and quiet and isolation… maybe rent an air BnB in a remote area next February for a month and see how you feel.

Normallynumb · 18/02/2025 13:38

This is me personally as I don't drive and am disabled
I moved from Bath to a west Wiltshire town within my budget 8 miles away
The property in Wiltshire linked above is in a little " quaint" town within my budget good transport links, but on the edge of beautiful countryside.
As you age, facilities like general hospitals become a factor( sorry!) and local amenities should you become unable to drive
I am just a 10 minute train ride from Bath with it's general hospital
Not too from the coast either like beautiful Dorset.
Basically futureproof your location

Handy forBath ( 5 miles) but lovely village on doorstep with several gastropubs, 2 lovely cafes, deli, post office , general shop plus 24/7 garage that stocks cook etc , chemist , good bus route

Somewhere where I have things to do and can make friends too many retire to the sea and end up in mental and physical decline lonely and bored.

Yes, this is worrying me, upping sticks and having to create a community for ourselves again. Or him popping his clogs and me being on my own somewhere with no support network.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 15:42

@JasmineAllen ha, ha - yep you are correct.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 15:45

@Normallynumb are you in Corsham ?? Sounds like it - Lovely little town - I go over specially to the butchers there and also the Chinese take away on the main drag

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 15:47

@Normallynumb ah - could be BOA with you mentioning the train - also lovely !!

SalmonWellington · 18/02/2025 15:55

Here: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/153775760

It's not actually remote - 3 railway stations within 3 miles, neighbours and a shop in walking distance - but you've a view of the sea past rolling hills and turn inland all the remoteness you could want.

Normallynumb · 18/02/2025 16:16

@Crikeyalmighty
My DS3 is in Corsham!
Is manager in a restaurant there too.
DS1 is in CD Bath
DS2 in Bristol so none have moved far!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 16:22

@Normallynumb that's handy - not far to any of them then !! - it is an area that covers a lot of bases though and I think might well suit OP but obviously depends on any limitations/budget . My FIL at 85 has moved 150 miles to bungalow in Frome .

That is what I'm trying to avoid. I need a community with something I can do like charity work thinking about if I couldn't drive etc. I can't stay where I am either.
