Where would you retire to that is picturesque?

Where in the UK would you find a lovely house (preferably detached) with great views to retire to? Views could be rolling hills, sea, river, lake, etc.

A detached house with sufficient land around it. Even better if I'd need to drive a couple of minutes to be able to find a neighbour to have a dispute with.

Are there property sites where there is an option to search for properties with views?

We have edited to Gower, Wales.

kindlyensure · 18/02/2025 19:30

yes @Crikeyalmighty Teddington - or any of those locations would deffo fit the bill!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 20:07

@kindlyensure they would - we have already discussed London as a big possibility because also want to be handy for airports so you can do cheapish last minute trips as want to split time in uk and not in uk a fair bit. Obviously health and money prevailing!!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/02/2025 20:09

@SiobhanSharpe you did the right thing !

I suspect, given family medical histories, that my DSis and I will end up being a household of two elderly widows in wicked good health, as were our grandma and great aunt. We are both indulging our husbands in fantasy land now, but we shall probably decide that for company and economy we should join forces for financial and social reasons when they go, in about eight to ten years, by which time we shall be 76-plus. Our DM was spry until she was 87. I can't think of a better companion for my last years than my sister. But yes, I think we will choose a nice smallish market town, with a small general hospital and easy flat access to shopping and cultural activity when we can't drive.

I'd go for Northumberland or the Lake District.

If you fancy Scotland, there's plenty overlooking lochs and seas to choose from.

Papyrophile · 18/02/2025 20:45

I lean towards Tavistock in Devon which seems to have lots of healthy seniors, and great food shopping, and either the northern Cotswolds or urban Herefordshire. I like Hereford as a city, and it's better connected via rail.

I moved 6 months ago, aged late 50s, to Swansea end of Gower. Brilliant move. Beautiful views. Stunning beaches, am so much fitter than a year ago even though still working full time, and lively community with hospital, etc.

Ventnor, IOW (if it's still there by then) or rural upstate New York or massachusetts- Cape cod in particular

DazedAndConfused321 · 18/02/2025 20:56

Ooh. I don't wish to make the OP's thread All About Me, but is there anywhere in particular you would recommend? Our budget is somewhat less than OP's, maybe £550/650k.

There are many lovely areas, Fownhope area to the South and in the North, Weobley, Kington are the bigger towns and both nice! There are many more lovely villages. Ledbury to the East is also lovely and a bit bigger. If you're happy with rural then out towards (or over) the border, Hay on Wye and the Wye Valley are just beautiful!
That budget would do you fine around here.

BigDahliaFan · 19/02/2025 08:33

we ponder selling up and buying a very small flat in central London….but as I keep saying we could just go and stay there more often instead and keep our network here.

friends go to Spain, a town full of Spanish people, every winter and air b and b….

JaneAustensKitty · 19/02/2025 13:09

A dear family friend retired to the IOW, they moved back to the mainland within five years because of the fact that they were having to use hospitals on the mainland due to one of them developing a significant health issue.

Jakadaal · 19/02/2025 15:20

North Northumberland without hesitation
