What age did you send your kids into the dentist without you in the room?

I'm passing the time waiting for our appointments with my 14 and 12yo boys. When I was young I went in by myself from about 7 or 8 but this is not the norm now so when does it switch to them going themselves now?

we always went together
until orthodontics appointment and dd was on her own.

although i specifically remember going in with my son for his vaccine at 15 and the nurse was really off with me and made me feel like i shouldn't be there!

Our dentist does family appointments, presumably for efficiency, so we all go in together (kids are 17 and 18)

I'm aways invited in at the orthodontist too. They seem to like parents around which is fine of course.

Ours won’t allow it under 16. DS had an appointment the week before his birthday and I had to go in with him!

I still go in with ds2, she does him then me.

Age 15, it just naturally happened and I sat out with younger siblings.

TheTecknician · 17/02/2025 11:14

I was about thirteen when I started going solo, as it were. Within a year or so I was making my own appointments and attending completely independently. I was terrified of the dentist until I was ten so I came a long way in a few years.

DD was 36 when she went alone DS 24.

My 13 year old goes to the orthodontist on his own. They suggested it as they said that they didn't need to see me every time.

DDs and me are still having all our checkups at the same time so all go in together. They are 10 & 13, I think this is still appropriate because if they need to improve their brushing or anything like that I need to know about it.
I think it'll be like that until they're 16 ish

Comedycook · 17/02/2025 11:28

Last time I took my dc they were 13/16....I went in ... didn't occur to me not to. We all go in together and they are seen one at a time.

My DD goes for orthodontist checkups regularly, she's 13 and still wants me to come in with her
