What are your favourite cities that you've visited within continental Europea?

I haven't been to many. Just Paris and Geneva. I liked Geneva more.

Budapest, I love it! Could really see myself living there, really interesting history, the bridges, architecture and has proper seasons! They get an actual summer with no rain and snowy cosy winters.

SandalsandPools · 17/02/2025 11:17

Munich is my favourite for now.

Shoxfordian · 17/02/2025 11:50

I love Madrid and Seville in the winter, blue skies and much milder than the UK

How cold is it at the time of the year?

It suddenly dropped below zero as we arrived and then started snowing. I'd actually posted on a thread about Cph saying it wasn't so cold this year and in rural Denmark we've had barely any weather below freezing. I've gone back on to apologise!

Vienna - absolutely beautiful, loads to do, friendly. If you're an art lover (or indeed cake lover) out of this world
Rome - what is there not to like!
Florence - my second spiritual home. Even in high season.
Amsterdam - love the old canals, the life, the museums, the feel of it (away from the seedy bits)

Unredchat · 17/02/2025 11:59

Warsaw
Prague

I'd love to visit Copenhagen and Vienna. For Denmark, would I struggle not knowing Danish at all?

I loved Copenhagen, however it is eye-wateringly expensive. I don't speak a word of Danish and didn't have any issues!

shockthemonkey · 17/02/2025 12:16

many of the above plus:

San Sebastian/ Donostia
Tossa de Mar (for a short stay only as quite small)
Santander
Santiago de Compostela
Small towns on Costa Brava (but not Barcelona) eg Figueres

shockthemonkey · 17/02/2025 12:18

Lower de Mar

LollyWillow · 17/02/2025 12:27

Amsterdam is my favourite although I do have to work out routes around the city which avoid the red light district and Dam Square.
I visited Oslo for the first time last year and cannot wait to go back.
I also spent a couple of days in Zaragoza a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. Far more than some of the better known Spanish cities - although I also have a soft spot for Granada.

TheNoonBell · 17/02/2025 12:29

Lille
Budapest
Belgrade
Helsinki

Have been to a reasonable number of larger cities in Italy, France, Switzerland and Spain, and would happily go back to see more sights.

In terms of my favourites, though, would be Perugia absolute top of the list, with a shout out for Arezzo, Bologna and Genoa (lived in Italy for a while, so it's a bit skewed!).

Would also like to go back to Toulouse and Grenoble; had brief stays in both and loved them.

Second Perugia (and Umbria in general). Lovely part of Italy.
My favourites are also Valencia, Tallin and Gdansk.

SquashPenguin · 17/02/2025 12:43

Id move to Berlin tomorrow if I could. I've been so many times and I just love it there.

I really want to do Vienna. Seems very safe. Idk why, but I worry about getting mugged in Barcelona.

Barcelona is my favourite because I love the Modernista buildings. I have been 5 times over the years and still love it. However my DM had her bag snatched and the car broken into when they went, so there is also that risk.

What put me off going to Barcelona was seeing a video of a very drunk man getting mugged for his Rolex outside a bar.

Agree with lots of these, I won't repeat the list! I can't see Valletta mentioned and I really loved it. Would definitely go back again.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 17/02/2025 20:57

Barcelona
Rome
Copenhagen
Prague
Munich
Palma

The above are my favourites. I’ve also been to Budapest and Lisbon but wasn’t that keen on them. Everyone else tells me they are great so think I need to go back.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 17/02/2025 20:57

I forgot Brussels. That’s a lovely city too.

AcquadiP · 17/02/2025 20:58

Rome
Venice

It's quite notorious for people getting robbed, but many big cities are.
