For how long do you feel clean after a shower?

ComfyCosyLemonPosy · 16/02/2025 19:39

I shower every morning, if money/time allowed I would probably have another shower before bed.
I feel like maybe a few hours after I shower/bathe Iose the 'clean' feeling, I definitely don't smell (wash scrupulously and use a strong deodorant/antiperspirant) but I definitely don't feel clean anymore!
Am I odd or does anyone else understand what I mean?

I don't understand people showering twice a day. Unless it's at the gym post exercise. This whole new trait of washing twice a day, once in the morning and then again before you go to bed is new and unnecessary - it's not good for the skin. It dries the skin out unnecessarily. It's really really bad for the skin. The skin only needs washing occasionally, even once a day is probably over the top.

I have a shower in the morning pre work.

@MixedBananas while I feel it's a bit odd for you to be interested in my toilet habits, nevertheless I'll answer. I use antibacterial wipes.

I feel like that's a myth. Washing removes dead skin cells, daily grime and oil. I think everyone should shower at least once a day and if you don't that's up to you. Just don't come near me.

Depends on the climate you’re in, and what you’re doing.

If you’re in a hot humid country I found I never really felt clean as I was always covered in a layer of moisture except in air con.

likewise if you have a heavy physical job you will sweat a lot, so the morning shower clean feeling won’t last long.

If you’re a light / office worker in a UK winter I would expect the clean feeling to last much longer than a couple of hours.

Could you have anxiety about germs/ smell etc?

Ickity · 16/02/2025 21:02

I’m an evening bather. I feel clean until the next evening, when I smell of cooking usually. Which I hate, so I wash my hair every night.

summer though, I have to wash morning and evening. Some days I could have 3 showers a day.

Titsywoo · 16/02/2025 21:44

If I shower in the evening I feel clean for about 36 hours. I don't shower daily - every 2 days is fine. My skin feels dry if I shower too often anyway.

No anxiety about germs, maybe a little about smell.
It's more the feeling of being clean, I know I am a clean person, I just don't feel it sometimes.

I also have no idea what this ‘clean’ feeling is. I just feel cold and wet when shower and find it annoying. Even with hot bathroom and hot shower. So I shower or bath and then rush to get dressed asap to warm up. Takes me about an hour to warm up again. So I don’t feel any cleaner than before shower, just cold. And then it’s a faff using hairdryer also

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 17/02/2025 05:22

Every 2-3 days. My hair gets greasy and I feel icky around the sweaty parts.

LindorDoubleChoc · 17/02/2025 05:37

By the time 24 hours has gone around I definitely want to wash again with soap and water. I wish we had bidets as the norm in the UK.

LoudPlumDog · 17/02/2025 05:54

OP, what do you mean by if money or time allowed? I have two showers a day, one is super quick just to wipe days dirt off for bed. It is really fast.

NattyTurtle59 · 17/02/2025 09:18

I alway read the many, many, cleanliness and hygiene threads on MN and laugh at the thought of how some of you would cope in a natural disaster - or rather wouldn't cope - with no running water or functional loos for days.

Unfortunately we are not on the mn 'top 5%' salary so having extra showers, even quick ones will add onto our bills.
We are also constantly running the washing machine and tumble dryer so we have to cut back somewhat.
I also like a couple of baths at the weekend as they help with some of my health issues so taking extra showers would start to add up.

I would manage perfectly fine, I grew up on a farm and I have probably been covered in more species shit than you can imagine.
As we are not suffering a natural disaster at the moment I am living my life accordingly.....unless you want me to start shitting outside just on the of chance we don't have a working toilet sometime?

Well I have no running hot water (and havent for years) and I manage fine.
My 'shower' is basically me stood in the bath with a bucket of hot water and a jug, it works the same as a regular shower!

(oh, and TMI but when my loo broke I just pooped in a dog poo bag and chucked it in the bin! Not like you could tell what was me and what was the dogs!!LOL).

FastFood · 17/02/2025 13:21

For the whole 24h between 2 showers.
Sometimes 48h if I have decided that I'll have a day off (often on a sunday).

TBH, I never really experience feeling dirty.
Last time was probably when I went to a music festival and had to adapt my hygiene standards to the circumstances.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 17/02/2025 13:28

Winter when the house is freezing and I'm never warm enough - every other day.

Summer - every day.

I worked in a school and I felt dirty as soon as the bell rang in the morning!

Topseyt123 · 17/02/2025 13:34

I shower every morning. That's fine for me.

In very hot weather I may shower in the evening too.

Motheranddaughter · 17/02/2025 13:36

I shower or bathe morning and night

mintjim · 17/02/2025 13:40

Two hours. I don't shower every two hours but I live the feeling of being clean. This thread is repulsive and explains why I can't even set foot in certain shops because of the smell of unwashed bodies. I bet the majority on this thread don't use a wash cloth either.

Oblomov25 · 17/02/2025 14:29

@GroovyChick87
Actually the recommendation is not to shower daily. It's recommended :

"experts suggest that showering several times per week is plenty for most people."

I was only responding, quoting this for people saying twice a day, or 3 times if exercising, which could be up to 21 times per week. Whereas recommended is only 3 or 4 times per week.

None of this relates to me, I was just quoting recommended.

anascrecca · 17/02/2025 14:50

A few days, when my hair gets greasy.

I think it's a bit odd to feel the need to be 'just out of the shower' squeaky clean at all times tbh. Once a day is easily enough. It's ok (and normal) to smell like a human being, not a bottle of shower gel.

Yes, I agree. The amount of self and clothes and house cleaning that some posters here report must be exhausting, and it's bad for the environment to boot.
