Long grain rice

This is possibly the most boring thread I've ever created...

Has anyone else found it almost impossible to buy "normal" long grain rice recently? We get our shopping delivered from Morrisons and you can only order the easy cook stuff which I don't like. I usually pick up the normal stuff in Aldi but I forgot when I popped in a few days ago so tried to get some in Waitrose this afternoon but they also only have easy cook. Managed to get some in M&S but it was from the organic range and cost £1.90 for 500g. It's 52p for 1kg in Aldi!

Anyone else have this problem?

I just buy basmati. Could you use that?

dementedpixie · 16/02/2025 15:16

We only use basmati or jasmine rice

cheesychips15 · 16/02/2025 15:21

Haha I'd never thought about that. I do buy basmati but only use that for curries, I use long grain for chilli or anything else I'm having with rice. I've got about 6 different types of rice in the cupboard, this might make my life a lot easier 😂

Basmati is four times the amount

Aldi seems to be the only place that sells it but it's no good in my rice cooker

Well a kg of basmati from aldi would still be cheaper than the 500g from M&S!

Aldi, sainsburys and tesco all say they sell long grain- but whether its in stock is another thing.

I've always found the basmati grains to be longer than long grain

Laila basmati 10kg - £12.50 in Asda x

What do you use long grain for?

We buy basmati or jasmine for any long grain rice needs.

I also use either the Tilda Wholegrain Basmati or the Biona Organic Brown Basmati whenever I make any savoury rice dish. (It’s even fine in Rice Pudding!)

However - these have mostly replaced rice in my cooking:

Try them - they’re a revelation.

Aargh! Sorry - I meant these:

Not sure I’ve tried the groats.

Interesting article - thank you. Probably wise to start trialling alternatives!

1 buy 10kg bags of basmati from the world foods aisle, lasts me around 4-6 months. I know know everyone can afford to pay for that much at a time but there's often special offers for Ramadan so if you can buy it in at least 5kg bags you will save significantly over the period plus you'll have a staple taken care of.

Iloveeverycat · 16/02/2025 17:05

I use long grain for chilli. They have it in sainsburys. £1.18 a kg

Darkpjs · 16/02/2025 17:08

I had the same issue so now buy a 5kg bag of jasmine rice every few weeks.
