Just curious - what time do you have your evening meal?

My women's group has started a restaurant activity. I'd like to join them, but they schedule the meal at 5p. For me, that's a bit early.

Of course I could make the exception just to participate, but I was wondering when MNers typically have their evening meal.

Anytime between 5 and 8, basically we fit it in around whatever activities are on that night. If we have it early then we usually have supper later on.
6.30 would be my idea kind of time to meet at a restaurant, time for everyone to settle, get drinks and order their meals and then food from 7ish.

HundredPercentUnsure · 16/02/2025 14:07

At home, usually start eating between 5-530pm. 6pm at a push. If going out for dinner with friends I have a light tea at home at 5pm and then table booked for 730pm but it's too late for me really. I don't eat after 8pm!

What time do you usually eat your evening meal?

AllTheChaos · 16/02/2025 14:08

Ideally 7/7,30pm, but working around Dd means 8.30/9 usually.

mitogoshigg · 16/02/2025 14:09

At home, between 6 and 6.30 usually on work days, a little later if running late.

If going out I tend to book for 6.30-7pm

AllTheChaos · 16/02/2025 14:10

When I was in the office FT I didn’t get home from work before 7.30/8pm, so was 8.30 at the earliest.

Depends on what I have on, but usually around 7p.

7ish. I'm not normally home til 6 at least so that's giving me a chance to get my coat off. On the nights when I have dance classes I'd rather eat later and just something light.

EggandStress · 16/02/2025 14:15

6.30pm. Almost without fail. DH is generally in charge of cooking dinner and that's the time he prefers.

Waitingfordaffs · 16/02/2025 14:15

7pm every night - guess we all like the predictability .. breakfast and lunchtimes do vary

girljulian · 16/02/2025 14:16

Tends to be a class thing with historical roots. If dad is coming home from the mine at 5, he wants his tea on the table when he gets there. If dad is coming back on the train from the City and gets home at 7, family waits for dad. I’m from a mining village so we have our tea at 5.30-6, even though I wouldn’t claim to be working class any more.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/02/2025 14:16

7.30pm - 9pm depending on work, evening commitments and how late we had lunch. 5pm is far too early for me - during the week I don't finish work until 6pm at the earliest and then have a 45 min commute home.

Mr Monkey works shifts in retail and sometimes isn't home intil 10pm.

readingmakesmehappy · 16/02/2025 14:16

We eat with the kids (I am not cooking two separate meals, it's good to eat as a family) so 5.30/6. If we're not eating with the kids, about 7ish. We went round to someone's for dinner and they didn't start serving until nearly 8.30. I was nearly ready to eat the table!

mugglewump · 16/02/2025 14:17

When the kids were little, we ate around six-ish. Now they are older, supper is usually some time between 7pm and 8pm.

queenmeadhbh · 16/02/2025 15:19

Pre kids 7:30ish, now we all eat together 6:30.

this is completely off tangent but I’ve never seen someone say “5p” and “7p” for pm. It makes it look like pence to me! Is that common in other places?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 16/02/2025 15:23

I'm staying with mum at the mo as she's just had surgery and she likes to eat before 5...when I'm at home it's usually between 6 and 7. On holiday we always eat later, around 8/8.30...any earlier and the restaurants are dead

TheLionandAlbert · 16/02/2025 15:25

Around 8pm.

cunoyerjudowel · 16/02/2025 15:25

Weekend and days I don't train around 5pm

During the week around 930 but it's light and snacky (this is because we train our sport until 9pm mon-Friday)

EarlierDistraction · 16/02/2025 15:32

Any time between about 5.30 and 9.30, it fits round everyone's evening activities (young adult DC and been doing this since they were older primary age). I don't think I have ever eaten out as early as 5 unless it's pre-cinema or theatre, if it's a week day that's when I leave work.

If you eat at 5 you'd be finished by about 7, what do you do for the rest of the evening? Normal for me with a group would be meet in a pub 5.30 onwards and eat at 7.30, finish around 10 and either head home or to another bar.

SwanOfThoseThings · 16/02/2025 15:35

Normally around 6:30.

Iloveeverycat · 16/02/2025 15:36

6pm every day

StormingNorman · 16/02/2025 15:36

Usually about 9.00-9.30 although I’d prefer to eat a bit earlier, around 8.30 if DH gets home at a reasonable time.

JimHalpertsWife · 16/02/2025 15:37

What time I eat my evening meal would be irrelevant if this is a weekly event. If I wanted to meet weekly with them, then I'd just tweak my daytime food to be able to feel hungry for 5pm. I can do that weekly for an event I want to attend.

Ha-ha - meant to say 5pm.

About 6.30

I wouldn't be able to manage 5pm because of work but if I had to eat that early I would just have something small for lunch, or even no lunch at all

Octavia64 · 16/02/2025 15:42

Anywhere between 5pm and 8pm. If no activities etc which usually dictate the time, then 6/6:30.

I do have to take some drugs at bedtime on an empty stomach so multiple hours after eating.
