Just curious - what time do you have your evening meal?

My women's group has started a restaurant activity. I'd like to join them, but they schedule the meal at 5p. For me, that's a bit early.

Of course I could make the exception just to participate, but I was wondering when MNers typically have their evening meal.

I aim for 7.30pm.

That leaves me with some time to breath after finishing work at 5pm, especially on my in-office days when I am. not home before quarter past 6.

DH often has work calls until 6pm. DD has two later afternoon activities and isn't home before 6pm/7pm.

DH and I grew up in a country with a hot cooked lunch and cold dinner between 7.30-8pm, we had coffee and cake/biscuits in the afternoon. None of us can stomach a cooked meal at 5pm.

Pre kids 7:30ish, now we all eat together 6:30.

this is completely off tangent but I’ve never seen someone say “5p” and “7p” for pm. It makes it look like pence to me! Is that common in other places?

It is very common in the USA!

iamnotalemon · 16/02/2025 16:19

Usually before 6pm. Early I know.

weegiemum · 16/02/2025 16:40

Through the week around 7:30, when dh gets in from work. We have 2 adult dc living with us and dd2 likes to eat earlier so she makes her own but ds likes to eat with us so helps me cook quite often (I'm disabled and have trouble chopping and standing to stir things).

Weekends it depends what we're doing. Quite often get a takeaway on Friday nights. We usually have Sunday dinner on Sunday evening with the dc, dd1 comes sometimes too.

Doje · 16/02/2025 16:48

Between 5.30 and 6.30pm ideally.

Before kids it was 7ish but that was because I finished work at 5pm, home and 6pm then a bit of faffing before cooking.

Now I do 8-4 to get home earlier for the kids. I'm hungry early so eat as soon as I can! I'm normally home at 5 and cook straight away unless there's clubs that I have to work around.

I've got a group of friends that book at 5.30pm when we go out to dinner and I LOVE it! Nice night out, good food, conversation, a drink or two and still in bed by 10pm. 😁

discdiscsnap · 16/02/2025 17:20

Breakfast 7am week day 8/9 am weekend
Lunch 12-1pm
Dinner (or tea as we call it) 5-6pm unless eating out or takeaway in which case we eat around 8pm

Completelyjo · 16/02/2025 17:20

7pm or later during the week and 4pm on the weekend.

Ariela · 16/02/2025 17:21

When everyone is home, usually 7pm, we listen to The Archers.

Goldpanther · 16/02/2025 17:26

6pm-6:30pm at home
If we go out for food we usually book a table for 6ish to allow for ordering before food arrives.

I turn down dinner invites if somewhere is booked for 7:30 or later! I couldn't eat that late, I like to feel like my food is digested before going to bed.

RampantIvy · 16/02/2025 17:27

About 6.30 give or take half an hour. 5pm is too early for me.

Do your friends not eat lunch?

HollyBerryz · 16/02/2025 17:28

Around 5-5.30. I'm starving if I wait any longer.

Trainr · 16/02/2025 17:30

2100, sometimes later, rarely earlier unless it’s the weekend when we have a late lunch as we’re usually out.

dudsville · 16/02/2025 17:30

Ideally, I eat twice a day. A nice brunch and a big late lunch. Dinner plans always irk me because you don't eat until 8 or 9 pm.

Don't you eat lunch?

Justleaveitblankthen · 16/02/2025 17:43

To the PPS calling it 'Supper' do you sometimes call it Dinner? Or is this a different meal?
I hear this term on The Archers and always imagine home made soup and warm crusty bread 😋
Growing up in the north, supper would be toast/ready brek/biscuits with a brew around 9pm
Tea would have been at 5ish. Dinner obviously at midday 🤓

RampantIvy · 16/02/2025 17:44

We call our evening meal tea.

HollyBerryz · 16/02/2025 17:47

@RampantIvy no not always. I work until 2ish and sometimes have other responsibilities after. Once it hits 3ish I don't bother and just wait for tea.

On a day where I can have lunch I usually have that early too though lol. I've never really been a breakfast eater so maybe that's why.

Never as early as 5. Usually around 8 although lately I’ve been doing it at around 7 so there’s more time to digest before bed.

Maxorias · 16/02/2025 18:02

I was often baffled by threads where people claim to be giving their kids dinner at 16h30. That sounds ridiculously early to me. 18h45 when the kids were very small was a good time for us as had to get up at 6am. Now we're closer to 19h30, which actually isn't ideal but I come in from work around 19h so not much choice.

YourWinter · 16/02/2025 18:03

I’m retired and live alone. I feed the dogs then aim to be eating my meal by 5.15/5.30.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/02/2025 18:04

Ideally 7 or 7:30. 6 or 6:30 if we need to because of going out somewhere afterwards. Before 6 feels way too early to me.

Greeneyegirl · 16/02/2025 18:12

Around 8pm

irregularegular · 16/02/2025 18:15

8pm usually. Certainly no earlier than 7pm unless we had some evening activity that started early.

Used to be more like 7pm a few years ago when children were at home, but shifted later during pandemic and never quite shifted back. And now I have evening activities 6.30-7.30pm a couple of evenings a week, so 8pm suits.

I'd book a restaurant for 7.30pm normally.

Ponderingwindow · 16/02/2025 18:16

Mostly 5-5:30

we both wfh and have an early start to the day and finish early. Plus dd has an early lunch at school so she is hungry. Basically everything revolves around the fact that DD’s school starts early so we all get up early.
