I’m not sure if it’s my job, my age, or both, but this winter feels like it’s dragging on forever. By the time I get home, I’m completely drained—I cook, do the dishes, then spend the rest of the evening in a vegetative state until I finally give in and go to sleep. I have zero motivation to go out or do anything because, first, I’m exhausted, and second, I find a lot of people in society today insufferable. I don’t know if it’s just a seasonal slump or something that comes with age, but I genuinely hate being around strangers in places like pubs or restaurants. People just seem like complete idiots, and honestly, I’d rather just hibernate or escape to an island away from everyone.

Down to 2 degrees here again, I am sick to death of it constantly being freezing and ridiculously windy, fortunately it's supposed to go up to 11-12 next week.

If money allowed for it I'd spend the entire winter in a hot country and come back again in March, I'm fed up of this every year.

TokyoSushi · 15/02/2025 07:34

It's been perpetual winter for about 18 months and I too am really sick of it. I think an excellent summer would help a lot of people.

RetroTotty · 15/02/2025 07:38

Forecast here, 'high' of 4c with rain and sleet showers all day. Lovely🙄

People really do love to moan, but hate doing anything to try and improve their situation. I get that it is so much easier to complain and blame everything around you, but you're the only person who can actively take responsibility and change the situation.

There are no magic wands - if you want to actively improve your physical and mental health, then eat better, sleep better and exercise more.

Wow, I had no idea it was that simple, silly me!

Why do you assume that people are doing nothing to improve their situation? I eat really well, exercise every single day and prioritise sleep. I’ve had bloods done. I’m still totally knackered and fucked off with everything 🤷‍♀️

Fairyliz · 15/02/2025 07:45

What makes it worse is they keep banging on about global warming; apparently it’s been the warmest January on record. Not where I fucking live mate!
Just something else to feel guilty about that I actually want it to be warm and sunny not this endless grey and cold.

2025willbemytime · 15/02/2025 07:45

Some of the posts have made me wonder if you have enough friends. I have one close friend where I live who I see most days and three others I see rarely. I'm moving soon and will be near my oldest friend and three other important people so I'm looking forward to that. There is an element of loneliness in my life though as my only family are my children and they don't live at home as one is working and two are at uni. This is why I will be looking to go back to work after 24 years at home. Eek.

TreesWelliesKnees · 15/02/2025 07:46

We aren't living how we are meant to live. Not in terms of social connections, diet, exercise, or levels of information we have access to. Our brains and bodies have not evolved to keep up with the kind of changes we have seen in recent decades. So what I do when I feel like this is a reset for a week or two. I have loads of vegetables, a daily walk in nature (because once I would have had to walk to forage for those vegetables), a digital detox (especially from the news and social media), and a face-to-face get together with a friend. And then a fire back at my 'cave'. I often think about how early humans lived and remind myself that our brains and what they need aren't that different from how they were then.

I appreciate that these things aren't always easy to do, especially if you're working full time and have caring responsibilities.

RedPanda901 · 15/02/2025 07:46

Agreed. A friend and I always talk about how when you come home from work you start your second shift: cooking, tidying, cleaning up after kids. The state of the world too and politicians with no backbone to do anything that doesn’t enrich the top 1%. People do seem less caring and optimistic. Blah!

CeeJay81 · 15/02/2025 07:57

Another one here the same. I think a better diet may help me but the miserable weather certainly doesn't help, it makes me comfort eat more. People def need something to lift people's spirits at his time of year too. It's a long slog from January to April, when the weather starts to improve.

TheScenicWay · 15/02/2025 07:57

Full time working is hard and it's really difficult to fit in exercise and healthy eating but that's what we need to do.
Plus some vitamin d and perhaps iron.
It's one of those things - the less you do, the less you want to do and the more you do, the more you want to do

BleepingBleepy · 15/02/2025 07:58

I feel like this. Wake up knackered and have to to walk the dogs in the shit, dark weather. Work not going great. Aging parents who were always dysfunctional but have become very unlikeable in old age, and the guilt that comes with not caring for them as I feel I should. Trying to fit a run in. House that is never clean thanks to huge, shedding dogs who come in with muddy paws. Feel guilt for putting heating on. I've turned off news push alerts because that was too depressing.

Wolfpa · 15/02/2025 08:03

Have you been to the Drs and got your vitamin levels checked? It sounds like a vitamin D deficiency. Or it could be SADs both can be treated really easily

I didn't assume people are "doing nothing", but the vast majority of people can still do more.

If that wasn't the case, the we wouldn't be seeing rises in noncommunicable diseases year on year.

BountifulPantry · 15/02/2025 08:19

I used to feel like this- always tired and worn down. For me it was a combination of being overweight, drinking too frequently, lack of exercise, mental health issues mainly anxiety.

Over time I have chipped away at each of these. Never a big overhaul, just one more alcohol free day per week, a 20 min exercise video on YouTube, a short walk around the park with the dog in daylight etc etc.

Im annoying myself for saying this but these tiny things have all made a difference, added up over time. I’m much happier now, sleep better and more positive about life.

They regret calling it global warming (although that’s essentially what is happening) because many people think, ooo wouldn’t mind that. Climate change is more accurate, and for UK that is largely affected by the Atlantic Jet Stream which is weakening because of climate change, we end up with longer colder winters and wetter summers. Added to the fact if you don’t have dual EU passports it’s much more complicated to move/retire to, Italy say, thanks Brexit, many in UK are stuck with it..

Midnightlove · 15/02/2025 08:28

100%

Even down to the fact that you don't want to be around people 🤣 I thought that was just me and DH. Being around random public just makes my skin crawl at the moment!

frozendaisy · 15/02/2025 08:33

If you could muster up the energy, and have a lovely, willing partner, no one has mentioned the benefits of having regular rolls in the hay! Human touch, orgasam, boosts your immune system, helps your brain and it makes your relationship stronger. You can feel lighter, sexier, you have heard about “the glow”, it’s true.

This is a huge benefit you can do actually in bed, which helps.

RabbitsRock · 15/02/2025 08:44

I’d definitely get your Vit B12 levels checked OP. I have never experienced tiredness like I was feeling before I started having 3 monthly B12 injections & it was like a miracle. I really don’t know how I functioned. Had other symptoms too including an upset tum & brain fog.

HaveYouTrumped · 15/02/2025 08:46

Yes, weather, stuck in, grey feels relentless

Cloud44 · 15/02/2025 08:47

@Meadowfinch do you mind me asking what vitamin it is you are taking?

soccermum10 · 15/02/2025 08:47

Yep same here. I'm blaming the dark nights and cold. We should be allowed to hibernate for the winter like some animals 😆

apeabs · 15/02/2025 08:48

I am really struggling with winter this year. For me it's not a physical exhaustion, I have energy, I just feel so mentally drained with the drudgery at the moment. I have a job I mostly enjoy, lovely family, hands on husband pulling his weight, no major worries, but really finding the monotony of life at the moment pretty dreary.

I just need more light and sun back I think. I am hating this cold weather, and the grey skies are killing my soul! I am praying we have a good spring/summer this year, they've been so crap the last couple of years.

user1471538283 · 15/02/2025 08:49

Yes me too! I'm constantly exhausted and I could cry from it. I think with me it's the combination of age, a really rough summer at work and personally, it being winter and all the madness everywhere. I haven't had a good night's sleep since I can't remember. I'm sick of being cold. don't think I've truly bounced back since COVID though.

I do wonder if it's the strain of having to carry on during probably one of the worst times in my life that's left me like this.

Meltedcandlewax · 15/02/2025 08:56

There just seems to be nothing to look forward to in life anymore. Everyone I know is struggling. Just basic life is an uphill struggle these days. Relentless negative news, awful weather all year long it seems, nothing on TV, housing estates being built on all the green belt land, it’s just all shit. Holidays for me are a break from monotony but I’m so stressed and tired I mostly just want to sleep on holiday now. It’s no way to live.

Eating out is not enjoyable anymore as portions are tiny, prices ludicrous and then there’s the service charge slapped on. I also find other people stressful and exhausting these days.
