Help!! Bed bugs? Ants? What is this!

(Photo of gross bug further down, don't scroll if you don't like bugs!)

Husband and I have had some bites over the last few weeks, only on our lower legs/ankles.
12 year old has no bites, 4 year old that sleeps in our bed probably 2/7 nights- no bites.
Naturally we expect bed bugs! Hoovered and steamed the mattress.
Now husband has been bitten again cue him inspecting our mattress with a magnifying glass for an hour.
We've found a few of these.. (it was still alive!)
Thank goodness for the eldest's microscope, this is under the max zoom. To the naked eye they are a tiny brown short strand shape.

We've convinced ourselves it's bed bugs, booked pest control, steamed and hoovered etc.
Reviews from the Travelodge my work put me up in late December have many bed bug reviews.

But now I'm realising they don't look like the bed bug photos I'm seeing on google!
Any advice??

Bedbugs are rounded in the body.

I does look like a tiny Genesect, though! (it's a pokemon!)

Often bites on ankles lower legs are typical of fleas

No idea what it is sorry.

Also when I click on the pic I can see your camera roll at the bottom. Just incase you didn't know!

I’ve seen many headlice and body lice (shudder) and it’s not either of them.

LemonBossy · 14/02/2025 21:24

Bites on feet and ankles sounds like fleas.

PrincessofWells · 14/02/2025 21:26

Not a bed bug . . . 🍾

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 14/02/2025 21:28

I put the photo into google for you and it states it’s a type of ant that lives in a wooded area but can be indoors near cables you may have an ant nest

Christ! Can you set fire to it? 😱

I think I'd be ordering a new mattress!
