Do You Say “ Pardon Me” Or Similar When You Pass Wind Or Burp?

DH is well brought up, polite & generally knows how to behave appropriately. However, he doesn’t excuse himself when he farts in my presence (which incidentally is quite often although it doesn’t bother me!) but he does when he burps. If a fart popped out accidentally around other people, he would apologise then.

The polite thing to do is to leave the room in advance and ensure one is alone before allowing such gases to escape. One must remain rigidly tense in the presence of others to ensure one has complete control.
(this being how my mother would respond to this question, who is the Ultimate Authority on etiquette but it is impossible to know what the correct etiquette is on this question by following her example as she has never farted or burped in my presence)

I do know that one shouldn't say Pardon if one is trying to avoid being detected as a lower class than one is. "Excuse me" would be better if one felt absolutely compelled to draw attention to one's lack of control.

Pardon me for a burp
Excuse me for a fart
Don't ask me why 😆

pearbottomjeans · 14/02/2025 07:37

No I say ‘HAAAAA!’

But then I only fart at home around my nuclear family. EG my mum will come to my house and fart and say ‘ooo PAAAARDON!’ which I find completely vile. But it’s different in your own home with your own spouse, and when it’s not your mother (yes I’m overthinking this)

Weirdly I find burping far more revolting. I think probably because it’s all so much closer to people’s faces.

AlleyRose · 14/02/2025 07:37

Pardon me for a burp

Don't fart in front of anyone! Disgusting.

BlondiePortz · 14/02/2025 07:38

Well in non regular company yes but really close people to me no

GroovyChick87 · 14/02/2025 07:39

I can control keeping farts in so wouldn't do it in front of anyone other than my DH. I don't say excuse me but I might say sorry if it smells particularly bad. This is going to sound unbelievable but I don't burp, ever. I've always wondered why.

BlondiePortz · 14/02/2025 07:39

I try not to do in public but can't I have never done it, if it happens it happens it is not deliberately done

Moltenpink · 14/02/2025 07:40

Pardon me for a burp
Farts you just pretend didn’t happen if you’re being ultra polite

Sherararara · 14/02/2025 07:41

Well being well brought up I of course have never farted in front of any other human ever. So it’s a non issue for me.

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 14/02/2025 07:42

I look around like I'm as surprised as me kids

I then ask them "did you hear that?"

If they say "yes"

I then look at my cat with an accusing eye

Now there getting older it's harder to fool them

But in polite society one must always have standards

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/02/2025 07:44

Nope, for a good fart I normally say "that feels better".

31stJune1973 · 14/02/2025 07:50

Oooh, no, the phrase 'pardon me' is so dreadfully common 😆

LuckySantangelo35 · 14/02/2025 08:00

Why is he farting so regularly around you? Is he trying to make you go off him and give you the ick?? Do you still fancy him OP? @RabbitsRock

SoftPillow · 14/02/2025 08:07

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever burped in front of anyone, ever.

Farting, perhaps twice a year in front of my DH and then I’d say, ‘I’m so sorry’. The kids have started to pull him up on his farting and he now very rarely farts in front of us.

It is an area of life where cats and dogs, well known for their silent but pungent emissions, really come into their own. "Oh, no, Tiddles/Rover has farted!"

At a pinch, you might be able to get away with blaming other pets, such as your hamster/rabbit/tarantula.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2025 08:19

We aways blamed farts on the dog. ‘Poo, was it you??’ - and she’d slink off and hide behind the sofa.

As for burps, just a ‘sorry’. No ‘pardons’ in this house.

RabbitsRock · 14/02/2025 08:21

@LuckySantangelo35 it really doesn’t bother me at all. We actually both find farting hilarious!
