My second appointment is in 3 weeks.. had first part done today. 3 weeks seems far away… is this normal… 😩

Yes completely normal by my experience. I can’t remember exactly why but think it might be to ensure all nerves are removed and no risk of infection remains before the next stage.

I think it’s to allow any infected material to drain away and ensure the tooth is ready to be packed and refilled. It seems fairly normal to wait.

Was told it’s fine to wait up to 6 months as long as you don’t eat anything hard on the tooth while you wait , assuming you mean the second appointment for the crown to be fitted .

Hi all, thanks for the replies. So the first treatment was done on Thursday. I had a look today and the abscess is still there? Does anyone know how long it will take for it to go away? Is it normal for it to be there still? I have no pain but I never had pain in the first place. My antibioics finished a day before I had my treatment and dentist knew about this.

It's normal, the abcess has to go down and the tooth has to settle. How long that takes is anyone's guess.

Yes. Mine wasn’t as bad as I expected. Lots of drilling and loads of analgesia but relatively pain free, more just jaw ache really ! There were big gaps between treatment definitely. Dentist built some kind of false tooth whilst it was ‘healing’ I think.

I had an abscess too which was far more painful. If I remember correctly, it had formed a hole in my gum so there wasn’t the same build up of pressure as the gunk had somewhere to drain.

I've had 2 root canals. One was straightforward and 2 years on the tooth is doing well. The second one was on my lower jaw, was incredibly painful and after the dentist had many attempts over the course of a few weeks to drill to the bottom of the tooth, I had to have it removed. If it's a tooth that is not clearly visible, extraction might be preferable.

I had my filling removed and antibiotics given, and then a week later had the root canal done.

I did still have the absess after my first root canal that went well and some numbness around that area for a few weeks after but it all settled down and I didn't need a crown.

I had one not long ago sounds right, I was dreading it but it just took longer than a usual filling, not painful and no problems afterwards. My dentist is amazing.
