Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

OP posts:
LaughingCat · 13/02/2025 22:00

Nah, we’re lovely to each other through the year. Valentine’s brings out the contrarian in us - how very dare society tell us what day in the year we should celebrate our love for each other? We’ll do that ourselves thankyouverymuch 😂. Seriously though, it just feels overpriced and underwhelming, like New Year’s Eve.

IAmNeverThePerson · 13/02/2025 19:59

I hope not. Just realised it’s tomorrow. Hopefully DH is as unprepared as i am.

The same 😱😁

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 13/02/2025 22:32

We don't.
The argument being why do we have to be romantic on a set day when we do it at any time? We never do anything romantic at all, DH just can't be arsed.

Daisy12Maisie · 13/02/2025 22:32

Yes. Tomorrow I m working in a different job to usual. So a grade up from what I normally do. A bit nerve racking as it's the first day.
Then I'll go home, make something to eat. Then pop over and see my boyfriend about 8. We will have cards for each other, will have a glass of wine (we rarely drink so sort of special). I've got him a big bar of galaxy and a card. He will have got me a card and maybe some flowers or a box of chocolates. Then we will snuggle up on the sofa, watch a film and eat the chocolate. No stress if my day ends up being chaos or I finish late but still it will be nice to see him.

Daisy12Maisie · 13/02/2025 22:34

Just read the comment about someone's husband wanting to take their daughters out to cheer them up. That's very sweet.

ildaogden · 13/02/2025 22:38

Yes! It's our wedding anniversary too!

Confusedmermaid1 · 13/02/2025 22:40

Not really, it’s my birthday so we celebrate something but it’s all about me 😂 it’s irritating when I just want to go for a meal and the prices are all hiked up though!

merrymelodies · 13/02/2025 22:42

No. It's been awhile since I was in a relationship and even when I was, I wasn't that fussed. Every day should be Valentine's Day.

ShineBrighterxx · 13/02/2025 22:43

Yes. I like to celebrate love. We don’t do all the retail crap but we celebrate love and life and each other !

SereneCapybara · 13/02/2025 22:49

Always. But I love any excuse to celebrate anything - especially in mid winter. I went out to get DH a card and some smoked salmon for breakfast tomorrow and got pulled in by the Valentine meal deal. I know it's a marketing ploy, but he will love steak and macarons and wine. He looked very happy when I was putting them in the fridge this afternoon.

I've never understood why people are so against it. It doesn't have to be expensive or sentimental - but a day when you make a bit of extra effort to appreciate your partner, especially towards the end of a long winter seems like a great idea to me, so I'll keep celebrating.

piscofrisco · 13/02/2025 22:49

Yes as a rule. I think it's nice and it breaks up the winter. I used to get the kids a little something too but I don't bother with that now they are older.
We aren't doing anything tomorrow as dh is away and I feel quite sad about it really.

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/02/2025 23:15

We mark the day and go out for dinner together, find a great card and write something nice in it etc. Why not? The whole “you should treat your partner like it’s Valentine’s Day every day” is a bit like saying “every day should be like your birthday”: yes, it goes without saying that people who love and care for each should treat each other well and show each other they’re valued every day of the year, and we do; but birthdays are still a great opportunity to actually take the time to go the extra mile, choose a present you know will make someone smile, a card that will make them laugh, take them to their favourite restaurant and spend some time together properly. Same goes for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, other hallmark days. Nothing is lost by celebrating a specific special day.

AcquadiP · 13/02/2025 23:18

Sort of: I buy something yummy to eat and share it with my dog.

HRHPRINCESSOFFLUFF · 13/02/2025 23:21

Waitrose Dine in £20 meal deal and a bottle of fizz, just like any other Friday night really

Newbie8918 · 13/02/2025 23:24

No, not really.

I posted earlier on a different thread about DM giving us cards since we were children and at 44, I expect she'll pop down with one tomorrow.

DH and I don't bother. We have tickets to a gig tomorrow (coincidence) and we're raging that our go to restaurant is twice the price for a set meal 🤣

Furious on your behalf!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/02/2025 20:13

Sometimes we do.Were not doing cards this year but we're out for an Indian tomorrow.

We’re doing the same! No cards or gifts, just going out to an Indian restaurant.

We usually do something for Valentine’s Day, usually just a a nice meal/takeaway at home. Together two decades.

Hoolihan · 13/02/2025 23:53

Yes! Lingerie, champagne in the bath and steak frites. 😋 Very excited.

BashfulClam · 13/02/2025 23:56

We have a card competition each year.

anonny55 · 14/02/2025 01:55

Yes

DH gets me roses and a card I get him chocolates and a card. We usually get a takeaway in or go out for dinner. I'm 38 weeks pregnant so not getting all fancy this year haha we're getting a takeaway and having an early night!

NewHeaven · 14/02/2025 02:03

Everyone will get a kitkat on their pillow & dcat will get a special salmon treat. The birds will also get special bird seed mix will little red suet balls mixed in.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/02/2025 05:07

I personally think it's a load of bollocks, but I better buy a card.

AuntieMarys · 14/02/2025 05:25

BashfulClam · 13/02/2025 23:56

We have a card competition each year.

So do we! It has to be appropriate...something we've watched on Netflix recently or a reference to a situation we've had. And a poem has to be written inside .....
We are off to the cinema this morning, bottle of Moet in the fridge and dh is cooking.

Loopylooni · 14/02/2025 06:26

Strangely I'm always single, or relationships break up just before it 🙄! I have brought small presents for my children though and will continue with this!

ChopstickNovice · 14/02/2025 06:48

Yes, we exchange cards and small gifts and either cook a nice meal or get a meal deal / one of those Dine In offers. Never go out though. So overpriced!!
