How does Prevent stop people becoming terrorists?

What does Prevent do to turn people away from extremism and terrorism? Can they really deradicalise someone who is of that sort of mindset? My question is prompted by the news today that apparently the killer of David Amess MP was dropped from the programme too quickly. How long would someone normally stay in the programme? And would Prevent have made any difference to Axel Rudakabana - he was referred to them 3 times but each time Prevent closed the referral. What happens to someone that Prevent can't deradicalise, do they go on a security service watch list?

The referrals are checked for risk by the police. They also ascertain if there is a risk of radicalisation. If there is a risk a panel of experts assess this further. This invokes the police, social services, mental health professionals and people from education. They are offered a programme called Channel but it's voluntary. They would be offered other support to via social services, mental health services etc.

I feel at a certain threshold the programme should be mandatory. Especially for re-referrals.

I think given what happened there will be changes to this process and it tightened up. Rightly so.
