Help me improve my bedroom (pics)

I need some help. I've recently decorated my bedroom and whilst I'm really happy with the dark black/grey wallpaper, I feel everything else lets it down.
I need to keep the furniture and headboard sadly as can't afford to replace. But I'm after some tips on how to make it look more cosy and warm it up a bit. Please help!!

It needs colour. Maybe a brightly patterned/ coloured lamp/ cushions/ curtains? Teals/ dark pinks?

if you change the window frame, that will make a real improvement

some beautiful bedding and cushions - get some colour in

and change the blinds

fungibletoken · 11/02/2025 08:15

Ooh lovely! I think all it needs is a bit of warmth - I'd add some gold touches where you can - e.g. a mirror, as part of a table lamp etc.

Olika · 11/02/2025 08:19

It needs colour. I would change the curtains to something more colourful and if it isn't enough then put something on your wardrobe doors (those sticking things).

DappledThings · 11/02/2025 08:20

For me it needs colour. Get some nice dark bedding and curtains. Get some pictures on the walls.

Bit cosy means different things to different people. I could never feel cosy with white bedding or walls but if you do then I still think.some colour where you can get it would help.

PoppyBaxter · 11/02/2025 08:40

Its too disjointed between the block of dark wallpaper and the rest of the room (which is very pale).
You need to reference the dark colour throughout the rest of the room - so, a patterned blind with a bit of dark in (and also pink, if that's what your going for), maybe a dark stool for your dressing table, a dark cushion for your bed etc. It lacks a bit of balance currently.

Onrepeat3milliontimes · 11/02/2025 08:45

I can't afford to change the window but can do lampshades, duvet etc.
Would teal go with pink, grey and black??

Can you at least paint the frames white?

JimHalpertsWife · 11/02/2025 08:49

I'd paint the inside of the frame white

I also think the contrast between the wallpaper and the three much lighter walls is too stark to be cosy.

Corblimeyeyup · 11/02/2025 08:52

It looks lovely and calm. My thoughts would be:

  • space out the pictures above the bed so that they take up the same width as the headboard. Ideally, the frames should be a bit larger
  • paint the window frame, radiator, wardrobes and door in the same colour as the pale walls (a bit of colour drenching). If you’re feeling bold, do all the white furniture!
  • Change the window blind for a neater roller blind. A lighter, or brass, curtain rail would help too
  • add some art you love above the dressing table mirror
  • add a couple of inexpensive rugs either side of the bed to introduce some texture and toning colour
  • if budget allows, change the lampshade from a flush fitting to a hanging one.
ValentineValentineV · 11/02/2025 08:56

Maybe a new diver that picks up the colour of the new wallpaper and add some art.

MissyB1 · 11/02/2025 08:56

Can I ask what colour is the wall paint? I'm looking for that kind of colour for my bedroom walls - I have real and gold wallpaper.

I agree with bringing gold accessories in to warm the room.

Fuschia could work well. Agree with all @Corblimeyeyup suggestions, I’d also add to get a thick looking duvet if budget allows. I read that “giving height” to the bedding helps it look cosy and does work..thick bedding, arrange pillows vertically, add cushions in front and turn the duvet back, it all helps. I think your overhead light is making it a bit stark too, maybe add a dimmer switch or a softer and warmer bulb. Also hide the cables.
And drape some (warm) fairy lights over the top of your mirror it’ll look lovely x

This. You don't have to add colour.

I would also add a mid tone between the dark and the light - in scatter cushion and/or throw on the bed.

dontcallmelen · 11/02/2025 10:21

Yy PoppyBaxter maybe add voile at the window to soften it if you don’t want to paint it, would also either change or paint the photo frames either gold or pick out a contrasting colour that compliments the dark wallpaper & go for darker bed linen/curtains/cushions/lampshades & a throw it’s a lovely room OP just needs a bit texture & little more contrast.

LER83 · 11/02/2025 10:23

For me personally, there are too many colours. My walls are a very light grey, everything else is dark grey, with a bit of colour with a pale pink duvet cover. I would change your curtains, blind, lampshades etc to dark grey or same grey as headboard. Keep the light bedding but put a dark/headboard grey throw over the bottom. Get bigger frames for the pictures behind the bed and space them out more. I would take the drawers out from under the dressing table, put it to the side and put a big plant on it. Centralise the dressing table with the mirror and put some tall decorative items on it. I would also get a dark grey chair.

SoScarletItWas · 11/02/2025 10:24

I agree with the disconnect between the dark wallpaper and the light paint. I would go all in for dark and cosy - paint the walls darker, soft furnishings change from the pale pinks to deep emerald or raspberry, something jewel like and bold.

Fairyvocals · 11/02/2025 10:26

Definitely paint the window frame. We had the same sort of dark wood effect UPVC frames and painting them white made a massive difference to the feel of the room.

Quietnowplease · 11/02/2025 10:31

I would paint the rest of the room the same colour as the wallpaper. Including the ceiling. Make it cosy and dark. Lean into it. Painting the ceiling dark will make the room feel taller, yes really. People wimp out with statement walls and then it ends up looking a bit meh and disjointed. Just go for it. Paint is cheap.

Quietnowplease · 11/02/2025 10:31

And paint the furniture to match.

Great idea, sand it down, primer from B&Q, and a tonal colour. There’s a great dark ash that looks almost black that would work. Change the handles too!

Nannyfannybanny · 11/02/2025 10:36

I actually like it as it is,scandi vibes, calming. Boutique hotel. My bedroom is almost all very light grey and white..I do have wicker. Oddly enough, this winter I have come over all "William Morris", throw on the bed, cushions, curtains. They will all come down when the clocks go forward. Painting pvc windows, especially from dark to light, isn't easy,it's not like painting a wall. My similar colour living room, has gold in winter, cushion covers, throws, duck egg blue in summer, but it's south facing very light.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/02/2025 10:42

I think it needs a bit of life. A small corner shelf or hanging pot with a cascading leafy plant. And a bushy one on the floor next to the dressing table.
