Audiobook to fall asleep to

I watched a thriller before bed and couldn’t sleep. So I found a funny audiobook to listen to last night and take my mind off work (busy stressful time). However, the narrator kept talking loudly and woke me up.

can anyone recommend a soothing narrator reading a story that is interesting and focuses my mind but doesn’t make me jump awake?

I have tried sleep sounds and bedtime stories for adults and neither were enthralling enough to take my mind off work enough to sleep.

its maybe the holy grail - enticing enough to take my mind off things but with a soothing, quiet voice that lets me doze off if I fall asleep.

I find an autobiography read by the author is generally good for drifting off to sleep to. I'm listening to Barack Obama's book currently, I find a "familiar" voice weirdly helps?

That’s helpful @MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking thanks

Anything Narrated by Stephen Fry. His voice is so relaxing.

It doesn’t matter to me. I set my Audible for an hour, and I reckon I make 10 minutes before I’m asleep. No matter how much I’m looking forward to listening to it.

I find that Agatha Christie novels narrated by Hugh Fraser are absolutely perfect for dropping off to sleep.

I also listen to them during the day as they are excellent.

Not an audio book, but Lisa Eldridge’s make up videos are very soothing to fall asleep 💤 to.
Works for me :)

Try Let’s Read on YouTube and podcasts. He’s very melodious.

I like Sandi Toksvig's Between the Stops. It's a memoir centred around the No 12 bus route in London. Sandi's voice is quite relaxing and I find I don't have to pay too much attention so I drift off to sleep quite quickly.

Lord of the Rings unabridged as read by Andy Serkis. Ideally slowed down to 75% speed

Not an audiobook but it’s stories with a soothing voice

I second Stephen Fry (Sherlock Holmes) and Hugh Fraser (Agatha Christie). For sleeping I find it works if it's a book I know really well so it isn't over stimulating but I'd obviously listen to something lively or unfamiliar during the daytime. James Bond books are good but I can't listen to Moonraker read by Bill Nighy as there's a short part where he does a car horn noise which is far too disturbing

I quite like the Michael Palin travel books. Diary of a Provincial Lady was also good. Autobiographies, travel books, anything without a complex plot or long chapters is best as you don’t have to concentrate to keep track, which will keep you awake.

I like the sleep stories on Calm

Sauvignonblanket · 10/02/2025 19:01

Miss Marple is perfect for this

SaltaKatten · 10/02/2025 19:01

I always fall asleep to audio books. I go for books I've already read usually. I like the rivers of London series. Also, anything by Jasper Fforde.

Ilovemyshed · 10/02/2025 19:02

Jeeves and Wooster is pretty good. On non-audio books, have you tried the Sleeping Forecast?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 10/02/2025 19:04

I find that an episode of In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg helps my insomnia. A panel of experts wittering earnestly. And if I don't drop off immediately I sometimes learn something esoteric.

Adam Kay has a lovely soothing voice. Very relaxing to have on in the background when trying to unwind. He tells great stories, too.

ZaraSkyTraveler · 10/02/2025 19:11

What a lovely bunch you are - you given me loads to choose from! Think I’ll start with Stephen Fry and Sherlock Holmes or maybe the sleeping forecast

thanks all!

This. Hugh Fraser is excellent. I'd also recommend the Marple books - Emelia Fox is my favourite.

Oh No!
I'm so invested in the characters that there's no way I can drop off to sleep.

Exactly the same with the wonderful Rivers of London series narrated by the brilliant Kobna Holbrook Smith!
I enjoy the stories and the voices far too much. ☺️

Agree that this narrator has the most luscious and relaxing voice. I listen to each book at full speed or 125% speed while awake and then immediately make it my going-to-sleep-to book and then I don't miss anything.

The Cazalet chronicles are really good too
