Audiobook to fall asleep to

ZaraSkyTraveler · 10/02/2025 18:06

I watched a thriller before bed and couldn’t sleep. So I found a funny audiobook to listen to last night and take my mind off work (busy stressful time). However, the narrator kept talking loudly and woke me up.

can anyone recommend a soothing narrator reading a story that is interesting and focuses my mind but doesn’t make me jump awake?

I have tried sleep sounds and bedtime stories for adults and neither were enthralling enough to take my mind off work enough to sleep.

its maybe the holy grail - enticing enough to take my mind off things but with a soothing, quiet voice that lets me doze off if I fall asleep.

I’m currently listening to Thursday Murder Club. I think I have listened to the same chapter 5 times as I keep falling asleep!

The Wombles narrated by Bernard Cribbins - I usually fall asleep within the first five minutes

TwoBlueFish · 10/02/2025 20:50

I tend to listen to history podcasts or I’ll put radio 4 extra on.

Yes to these or the marlow murders series.

mostly going through phase of Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell read by Lorelei King at the moment.Doesn’t work if it’s a different narrator though.

Stephen Fry reading Sherlock Holmes isn't a bad shout though there are some stories with shouty bits thst might wake you (sorry I can't remember the precise stories as also used it to fall asleep to).

Another tip is setting the speed to 0.8. It's amazing the difference that makes!

It doesn’t matter to me. I set my Audible for an hour, and I reckon I make 10 minutes before I’m asleep. No matter how much I’m looking forward to listening to it.

Same here 😂

This is me too, maybe not ten minutes but I fall asleep listening to most audiobooks

Do you have the membership plus, what has loads of free stuff? (I’m not sure if this is a standard membership thing, I’m sure someone else will know). The Stephen Fry Victorian/Edwardian Secrets are a good series, and I always fall asleep to those.

I like The Infinite Monkey Cage with Brian Cox. Interesting enough if I need to take my mind off something, just nice and comforting in the background while I nod off.

Greenkindness · 10/02/2025 21:04

It’s not a book but the shipping forecast on Radio 4. I go back a few days on the app, then set the sleep timer for 1 hour.

I find that Agatha Christie novels narrated by Hugh Fraser are absolutely perfect for dropping off to sleep.

I also listen to them during the day as they are excellent.

This is what I use also. I relisten in the day to the bits I've missed when I'm asleep. But, the stories are so familiar, it doesn't really matter.

Bergamotte · 10/02/2025 21:11

The Sherlock Holmes stories with Carleton Hobbs I find are read in a very soothing way. They are available permanently on BBC Sounds and I've listened to them all many, many times while getting to sleep. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/b01j9gzs?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobileMiss Marple with June Whitfield is good too, when that is on.

Michael Jayston reading John le Carre, it's on YouTube, so relaxing...

I rhink anything narrated by Colin Mace or Phillip Madoc they both have wonderfully soothing voices.

I with audio books I tend to search for narrators I like 1st then search through the books that come up and listen to the sample to decide which one I want.
I agree with pp , slow the booked down just a little it makes a big difference.

On bbc sounds bbc3u ( unwind) they have sleep forecast and other sleepy programs tbh it's not my thing but it may work for you.

Neil Oliver history podcasts, or his novel Master of Shadows (I've never progressed past chapter 2!). He's my go-to to help me sleep. I find his voice very relaxing.

Ian Mortimer - The Time travellers guide to....

Regency Britain
Medieval England
Elizabethan England
Restoration Britain

Duh · 10/02/2025 21:28

All creatures Great and Small read by Callum something (the actor who plays James Herriot in the C5 series).

Gentle stories, gentle voice.

Mumteedum · 10/02/2025 21:33

Got to be Richard Armitage as narrator. He's so good.

He does the Joy Ellis Jackman and Evans series. They're my favourite.

Nicola Walker is good too.

Wish you could filter by narrator on there!

BeBesideTheSea · 10/02/2025 21:40

On iPlayer there are a couple of series that work for me (and they are free!):
Sherlock Holmes Short Stories read by Hugh Bonnerville

Shedunnit - a v extensive series on Golden Age Detective mysteries. Podcast rather than book but Caroline’s voice is so soothing.

I always fall asleep to audio books. I go for books I've already read usually. I like the rivers of London series. Also, anything by Jasper Fforde.

The Rivers of London books are great for this. I also rate Natalie Haynes.

Lord of the Rings unabridged as read by Andy Serkis. Ideally slowed down to 75% speed

Won't that take about a decade to get through?!

Winterscoming77 · 10/02/2025 21:46

David Attenborough has an audiobook on Spotify premium at the moment

Janella · 10/02/2025 21:47

Orbital is nice as an audiobook, very relaxing
