Audiobook to fall asleep to

I watched a thriller before bed and couldn’t sleep. So I found a funny audiobook to listen to last night and take my mind off work (busy stressful time). However, the narrator kept talking loudly and woke me up.

can anyone recommend a soothing narrator reading a story that is interesting and focuses my mind but doesn’t make me jump awake?

I have tried sleep sounds and bedtime stories for adults and neither were enthralling enough to take my mind off work enough to sleep.

its maybe the holy grail - enticing enough to take my mind off things but with a soothing, quiet voice that lets me doze off if I fall asleep.

Another good one is BBC Sounds The Food Chain.

The one about vanilla is so interesting.

Didn't manage to fall asleep as it was too good 😂

On BBC Sounds (both are entire novels read as audiobooks rather than abridged dramatic versions)

  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Cranford
Both beautifully read classics with a soothing narrator.

On Audible - Life at Absolute Zero by Lynne Truss.
Very funny, poignant and perfectly read by the author. And very soothing intro music to each story.

Not sure that meets the brief of 'interesting and focuses the mind' especially if sleep stories aren't engaging enough for the OP 🤣

Fair point 😁😁

I did actually read the OPs post and thought it might help her sleep if her mind is busy and she's stressed. It's helped my son recently.

However it won't be interesting!

It definitely seems to help some people - my brother can't sleep without it! I am glad it has helped your son too. I can’t bear it personally but everyone has got to find the right thing for them.

The sleepy bookshelf podcast is great. Classic books read in a very calming way!

Not an audiobook but it’s stories with a soothing voice
Nothing Much Happens

Yes that's a good one

I sometimes fall asleep to really familiar stories; so things like Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile or A Murder is Announced.

Also old favourites like The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Blood Doctor by Barbara Vine, basically anything where I know and love the story already.

I like the suggestions above for Cranford and Jane Austen novels.

Try the sleepy bookshelf - lots of lovely classics which are very soothing. I haven't finished an episode yet as it knocks me out 🤦‍♀️
