If you have wide hips and are a side sleeper, what mattress do you have?

I'm at my wits end. I have wide hips, sleep on my side and I'm currently in agony.

Bought an Emma mattress a few years ago which I really liked but it sagged horribly after a couple of years.
Tried a premium Eve, it was too hard and gave me back/shoulder pain.

Now splashed out on a medium tempur which felt like a cloud in the shop. I had such high hopes. Arrived and it's rock hard. Not sure if its because we have a cold bedroom as I sink into it after a while but now getting hip pain which I had in the past on a mattress that was too hard.
I'm hoping the tempur will break in but wondering what else to try if not. Money not too much object for the right thing.

I've generally preferred foam mattresses for stability and not feeling DH move but wondering if we should get a sprung one.

I’d try putting something inbetween your knees while you sleep.

I often sleep with a pillow between my legs but it doesnt change the fact my weight is pressing on the point of the hip on the side I'm sleeping on and my hip pushes my spine out of alignment if my lower hip doesnt sink into the bed enough

Mine's pocket sprung (not too many - I assumed I wanted the most possible but went to an independent bed shop and he advised based on my height and weight) with built in latex topper. It doesn't look like anything special and wasn't especially expensive, but is so much more comfortable than any of my previous mattresses. I know that pain so you have my sympathy!

Our new silent night mattress with memory foam topper has been a game changer for me. (Also wide hips and side sleeper). Have you tried a foam topped one? You end up needing to buy deep size bedsheets but it's so worth it!

RossGellersCat · 10/02/2025 11:26

(Just to clarify I mean mattresses with an additional memory foam topper, not just a foam mattress).

I just have memory foam. I also started Pilates recently which has made me more conscious of the way my spine is and has improved my sciatica no end, so maybe that would help too?

Me, we have a pocket sprung one with a foam layer. It came from bensons and was classed as a 2/soft

They will try and convince you that you don't need a soft mattress because they have more medium and firm ones available- but I really do and if I sleep on a hard bed on holiday I really suffer!

Theforbiddenforest · 10/02/2025 11:37

We have recently bought a new Tempur mattress. We went for the medium-firm one as to me it was more comfortable than the soft/medium options.

The medium-firm has a springy layer in it which makes it feel a bit more like a hybrid. I do side sleep but regularly change sides during the night and the springy layer makes it easy to do. When I tried the others in the shop it felt really awkward moving about.

I find the Tempur a lot more comfortable than our very expensive visprung mattress we had before.

I have wide hips and have constant leg pain when lying down

Is that the problem? 😅

I've got an emma mattress which has dipped on the sides that I sleep on - 5 years old x

I have a tempur mattress. Very comfortable but £££.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

@Theforbiddenforest @mondaytosunday Did you find there was a break-in period with your tempur?

Simba mattress improved my hip and back pain massively. Best mattress I've ever had.

Theforbiddenforest · 12/02/2025 22:23

@PinkHotelPlease No break in period for me, found it really comfortable straight away.
