What do you do on a Sunday to get organised for the week?

Or indeed at any other time?

OP posts:

I will just add though-I was replying to the OP in good faith about what I do on Sundays. Not really expecting to be told I am babying my child and ruining him by merely talking about how I iron his clothes. But hey ho. Just feel lucky if you don't have a child who suffered from such an appallingly mismanaged birth that he ended up with severe disabilities.

You sound like you are doing a fantastic job.

MimiSunshine · 09/02/2025 19:33

Have a small magnet white board. Write the lunches and dinners on for the week plus any out of the ordinary activities plus attach related invitations or letters etc.

then I do f need to be asked millions of questions. Everyone can just look at it and know who needs a packed lunch or a lift etc

Nottodaythankyou123 · 09/02/2025 19:33

My youngest wakes up early, so I try and get up, rather than fester on the sofa, and deep clean the house. Means that by 9.30/10 the house is clean, dogs walked, baby napping and the day is free to do what we want and relax together. I make sure I’ve done a click and collect order, with a vague meal plan (luckily mostly breakfasts as the kids eat at nursery and we have gousto for dinner x5) with a few lazy backups.

My main things though are just making sure the laundry basket is empty and the house clean for the week ahead. I’ll also pack the nursery bags for the week, and have a couple of spare sets of clothes to swap into the bags if they get used.

Sunday evening, and this is weirdly controversial at work, I login to my emails, whilst watching a film assess any chaos from the weekend / previous week’s work I may not have finished and make a to do list, and even try and do a couple of easy bits so that Monday feels less daunting. I appreciate working on a Sunday evening isn’t for everyone but it’s the only thing I’ve found that stops the Sunday scaries otherwise I seem to feel really anxious about the week ahead

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 09/02/2025 19:34

Thanks. Sorry for biting. PPs hit a nerve. I am doing a fantastic job quite frankly. Like most of us all on MN tbh.

This thread makes me feel very inadequate 😣

I’ve never been to a gym at 6am, only once soaked oats overnight.
I have been known to get dressed by picking up the item of clothing from over the back of the chair I slung it the night before.

MissHollysDolly · 09/02/2025 19:37

Me and DH:

  • plan the week - who's cooking what, who's picking up and dropping off from school, who's walking the dogs. We go a few weeks ahead so there are no surprises with who's going into the office on which days, food is bought for meals etc
  • get ahead on cooking if poss - cook/freeze, chop bits
  • ironing for the week

Kids

  • pack bags
  • uniform ready for Monday and Tuesday
  • check what homework they've forgotten/ stuff that's lingering in bottom of bag etc

Haha this is me naturally tbh but my job has just got far more stressful for various reasons, my kids are both going through difficult phases and I just have to find the energy to make life a bit easier! I’ll still never do a 6am gym though 😂

Andnowshesatoddler · 09/02/2025 19:40

I don't iron my clothes so I wash my work wear and hang them up with pants tights etc ready for the week to start takes no more effort putting them in a wardrobe or a rail ready to put on but makes morning a little less faff.

Water bottle cup etc is in my handbag.

Anything my daughter needs for daycare hand over also in my (enormous) handbag

I check my banking as I do regularly throughout the week anyway but make sure my credit card balance matches my "credit card money" spare bank account ready to transfer it over when my statement is out.

I try and tidy up as much as possible but I certainly do not waste any of my weekend on chores I do it throughout the week by large.

Fabulousfeb · 09/02/2025 19:40

@ProfessorLeveretGrey

It didn't even occur to me whether your dc have needs or not I was personally admiring the technique 😚.

I found the comments made by those two posters absolutely appalling to be honest how do they support or assist anyone.

What do those comments add to the thread

It's very rude and bad mannered and reflects only on them.
Never feel you need to explain or qualify on here.

dijonketchup · 09/02/2025 19:42

So interesting that there are two main types of people on Mumsnet

Andnowshesatoddler · 09/02/2025 19:43

Somewhat not the theme of the thread but can I ask how people store a week's worth of eggs? Are they in shells until the day of etc. I could really do with having eggs for Breckfast as a simple way of getting some morning proteins.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 09/02/2025 19:45

Sweet FA, it’s a day off.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 19:49

Very little, buy some food for the week for my breakfast/lunch at work. Wash/dry dcs uniform if not already done. That's it.

Bellienoo · 09/02/2025 19:50

We have a seperate set of drawers, one for each day of the week. All the kids uniforms including underwear is put in to that on a Sunday. Lunches are made and bags packed for school. Baby change bag is re stocked and by the door with school bags, work bags and coats. Shoes are out for the kids the night before. All kids bathed and hair washed/dried then we alternate mon-fri based on pe days, unless both need to be bathed then they will be.
Each day of the week is assigned a room or two which I deep clean every week the same, helps me to not feel overwhelmed (obviously still do general cleaning every day such as sweep after meals and wipe all sides, and anything emergent gets done). I will add I’m at home at the moment with a baby so make use of nap times whilst kids are at school- when I was working this was done after bedtime but not quite as in depth!
Washing is handled by DH and I will put all away before bed tonight.
Meal plan is done for the week for each person- eg some days we eat together, some days the kids eat separately to us.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 19:50

I’ve never been to a gym at 6am, only once soaked oats overnight.I have been known to get dressed by picking up the item of clothing from over the back of the chair I slung it the night before.

I'd say this is more normal

Apfelkuchen · 09/02/2025 19:51

Weekly food shop and exchange of information with DH about who is WFH, in the office or traveling with work on which days over the coming week, and what appointments etc DC have. Then I spend the rest of the day trying to forget about Monday being imminent.

cunoyerjudowel · 09/02/2025 19:52

Iron uniform / washing
Meal prep my lunches and dinners for the kids
Plan my diary re training and activities for kids also
Pack sport bags for Mondays training and put in car
Clear the laundry room to make mid week washing easier

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 19:54

My dc generally have school dinners & we often use Hello Fresh etc plus school/high street are 5mins away which helps. Dc have 5 of everything uniform wise but i just hang it up. they can get their knickers & socks out by themselves.

Teencentral · 09/02/2025 19:57

I tend to do the ironing on a Sunday but that's it, never occurred to me to try and get things done for the whole week and no plans to change that

LeanIntoChaos · 09/02/2025 20:00

I wish I was super organised, but I'm often busy doing stuff on a Sunday.

Today took the kids 1.5 hours away for sporting thing. Got back at 4:30. I was feeling pretty impressed with myself that I had cooked dinner for today and tomorrow at the same time and washed up lunchboxes for tomorrow! Having read this thread..... I'm now less impressed with myself. 😁 I'll do anything else tomorrow morning. Kids uniform is currently drying....so will have to run an iron over it in the morning. I want to enjoy Sunday evening!

Laundry, including iron school uniforms, polish up shoes, bake gf bread for the week freeze some - big shop including packed lunch stuff, meal plan, downstairs cleaned. Sometimes I make yoghurt for the week.

Could I ask for your gf bread recipe please? Really need to start making my own as the supermarket stuff is invariably expensive cardboard

GameOfJones · 09/02/2025 20:12

Children's homework all done.

School dinners booked on the app.

Laundry basket empty and everything washed and tumble dried (although not necessarily put away if I'm being truthful! But all clothes clean.)

Everyone showered/bathed and beds changed.

Bookaholic73 · 09/02/2025 20:15

Meal prep
Meal plan
Write out a plan for the week
Plan my exercise

All done with a very large glass bottle of wine in hand.
