Sunday lunch - how common in 2025?

Hi all,

Just pondering really and wondered how many of you have a roast dinner most Sundays? I had one almost every Sunday as a child. We have just had roast beef and yorkshire pudding, with raspberry and coconut sponge for pudding. I would say it's very unusual for us to miss one.

Is this still the case in your house? Did you have the same Sunday dinner as a child? Would absolutely love to hear from people whose parents or grandparents are not from the UK - what is your Sunday lunch tradition? Have you incorporated any traditionally British elements over the years?

Yes we mostly do. But we're not today as we have other food to use up rather than waste.

Livefreely · 09/02/2025 15:34

I really don’t like Sunday lunch! Nothing about it is appealing. Husband loves it though so we compromise and maybe have it once a month. As a child I did have it regularly.

CosyAutumn · 09/02/2025 15:35

We often have it in the evening on Sundays during winter, but not so much over summer. I'm not doing it tonight because I can't be arsed.
As a child in the 80s, I remember it being pretty regular - either at home or at Grandparents'.
I don't ever make a pudding but people often have ice cream or chocolate or similar during the evening if they want to help themselves.
As a child, there was always a pudding.

Yes we have one every week until its gets nice and sunny (hopefully) then we switch to bbq. It’s an opportunity to get all kids together usually and we’ll have a pudding to make the time spent around the table a bit longer. It punctuates our Sunday really. Sometimes if feels like a lot of faff but I miss it when we don’t do it.

Felizsenora · 09/02/2025 15:36

Every Sunday!!!!!!

HarryVanderspeigle · 09/02/2025 15:36

No, we never do a big lunch. Occasional a roast, but always for dinner.

FreedomandPeace · 09/02/2025 15:36

We always have Sunday lunch.
Not a roast as we are vegetarian but something a little more special than other days.
So today it’s roast potatoes, yorkshires, cheesy marmite rolls, cabbage and peas. For dessert it’s apple crumble ( Hugh fernley whittingstals recipe which is amazing )

When growing up we had the usual meat roast as my parents weren’t vegetarian

My Irish heritage meant cabbage, potatoes and meat in the same pot was a regular dish.

We always sit at the table to eat and as children dh and I always did as well.

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/02/2025 15:36

It’s a bit sporadic and more likely when the weather is cold. But equally, we might have a casserole in winter too.

Coffeeishot · 09/02/2025 15:37

Yes we do and did Sunday dinner,.growing up it was 4pm not sure why but we have it at 6 or usual meal time, my adult dc don't seem to go in for it as much and just have whatever they fancy on a Sunday,

Loveduppenguin · 09/02/2025 15:37

Yep, I currently have a ham on. Am doing mashed potatoes, cabbage, carrots and a white sauce. Perfect for a Sunday.

Badknitter · 09/02/2025 15:37

Yes, most Sundays.

buttercupcake · 09/02/2025 15:38

Every single Sunday until the summer, then we switch to bbqs!

I'm also having ham and I might do cheese and leeks and definitely carrots.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 15:39

We don't do a roast every week, maybe once every 3 months. But dc have school dinners & one day is always a roast. Just do whatever on Sunday, today is spaghetti bolognaise & sticky toffee pudding.

Coffeeishot · 09/02/2025 15:40

Although 1 Sunday ill do a beef stew.

Caspianberg · 09/02/2025 15:40

Rarely. Maybe 1-2 times a year, usually when in laws visit.
We don’t even have a ‘roast’ for Christmas now days.

Everyone is unwell here today, so it was cheese and tomato on Toast for lunch. If we muster up energy then homemade fish and chips for dinner.

I guess we don’t really eat your typical meat and veg type meals very often now. It’s more likely something like a Greek meze, curry, Italian type meals.

Thecomfortador · 09/02/2025 15:41

We mostly had one as a child, and Sunday was a day of cooking for my mum. But my parents are more civilised than me and I simply don't have the organisational skills to do one every Sunday. Plus it's only really me who properly enjoys a roast, there's so much moaning it's not worth the faff regularly. Today will be a curry which is currently in it's constituent parts. Must start on it soon or it'll be beans on toast again.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/02/2025 15:41

Yes but at 7pm and not in the summer when it's hot although we do have a special meal on summer Sundays.

DD's BF's mum does too and they alternate between us.

peachescariad · 09/02/2025 15:42

I do a roast every Sunday evening during the winter. Move to bbqs in summer when we can eat outside. Have done this since kids were little and the ones still living at home are in their early 20s now.

CarefulN0w · 09/02/2025 15:43

It's a regular thing for us. We are having gammon today. It's an easy option when our adult DC come over. (Their first question is usually what's for pudding). Sometimes I do a very late cooked breakfast instead but either way it's a nice way to catch up.

Snorlaxo · 09/02/2025 15:43

Only in the cold months in my house and we eat it as our evening meal rather than lunch.

greengreyblue · 09/02/2025 15:43

We are early 50s. Probably have a roast one Sunday out of 4 in winter . Never in summer. I make variations on a roast most often. Today doing roast pork fillet with a sort of roast potato( skin on, cut into big chunks- no par boiling) and roasted carrots and leeks. Had some Yorkshires in freezer that DH made a few weeks ago so Will have them too.
We tend to eat around 4/5and never lunch time.

AlisonDonut · 09/02/2025 15:43

I am a vegetarian and until last year we always had a roast on Sunday. I switched to all day breakfast though as it is easier here to get veggie sausages than anything one can use in a roast, so have that instead now.

hopeishere · 09/02/2025 15:44

We have a toast barely every Sunday. Just me and DH kids don't like it.

recklessgran · 09/02/2025 15:44

We always did every Sunday without fail when the 5DD's were living at home but they've all grown and flown now. It was usually roast beef and Yorkshire with all the trimmings. These days now there's only DH and I, I've become very lazy and don't bother unless one or more of the girls and their respective partners/children are visting. Somehow it feels worth the effort then for a crowd. If it's just us two and we fancy a roast we just go to the carvery. Having said that I am in fact doing a roast chicken dinner today for just DH and I but we'll have the leftover chicken tomorrow with a tray of roast veg so nothings wasted.
