Sunday lunch - how common in 2025?

Hi all,

Just pondering really and wondered how many of you have a roast dinner most Sundays? I had one almost every Sunday as a child. We have just had roast beef and yorkshire pudding, with raspberry and coconut sponge for pudding. I would say it's very unusual for us to miss one.

Is this still the case in your house? Did you have the same Sunday dinner as a child? Would absolutely love to hear from people whose parents or grandparents are not from the UK - what is your Sunday lunch tradition? Have you incorporated any traditionally British elements over the years?

My mum always cooked a Sunday roast and baked all afternoon for high tea, she spend the whole day in the kitchen.
I always cooked a roast but not the high tea. Now the kids have left home DH and I go to the pub for one.

Once a month here, I love them but neither DC are keen. I bribe them with a homemade apple pie afterwards.

I’d have the works every week if they loved it.

I’m a bit amused at all the people saying they “switch to bbqs in the summer… “ like we live in a country where that can happen most Sundays. Grin☔️

We had a BBQ on New Years Day, black bream and flatbreads 🤤

Probably 3 weekends out of 4 we have a snday roast. Mainly becuase it is the one meal noone complains about and everybody likes. Don't do anything extravagent, meat, potatoes and a couple of veg options.

CoastalCalm · 09/02/2025 16:38

Probably once every six weeks on average , we cook a varied diet and a roast just isn’t that attractive to us really , saying that we have had two on consecutive weekends - home last Sunday as we had a large piece of pork husband wanted to use half of to make some bacon and today at the pub for a relatives birthday

ToBoneOrNotToBone · 09/02/2025 16:40

Very rarely growing up and it would always have been at dinner time rather than lunch. Same now although we are having roast beef tonight because we discovered Ds2 liked it at new year so it's another meal that we'll all eat.

Is it a geographical thing? I don't feel like it's common amongst anyone that I know to have a Sunday lunch.

DiscoBaIIs · 09/02/2025 16:44

I have my kids EOW, so 26 weekends a year - of those, I'd say I make a (vegan) Sunday roast 20 times, only missing it if we are on holiday or one of the kids has a Sunday game/dance show etc. I don't bother making it on the Sundays I don't have them.

Edit to add, I grew up having a Sunday Roast every Sunday, and I loved the tradition of it, and want that for my children.

Second edit! As a child, we'd have it around 1.30, after church. We don't do church now, and I don't like such a big lunch, so our Sunday roast is a dinnertime thing.

HollyBerryz · 09/02/2025 16:45

Rarely. I like to chill at the weekends but do a roast in the week once in a while.

AyrnotAir · 09/02/2025 16:47

No it's not common for us. We are often travelling hours away and back for a sports game on a Sunday, so often aren't home till after dinner and just grab something when out. Maybe have it once every month or two in winter, when we have had a Sunday at home. Don't bother in summer.

MargaretThursday · 09/02/2025 16:49

We do, but in the evening.

Dh and dd1 love it. Ds hates it, but he's not terribly keen on meat as such. He often just has the veg.

StScholastica · 09/02/2025 16:50

Yes, always 😋

VictoriaEra2 · 09/02/2025 16:50

Yes we pretty much always have a Sunday dinner. Lunch is a breakfast fry up brunch style as well. Everyone seems to like it.

AuntieMarys · 09/02/2025 16:55

Never. I've never cooked one.

What country, or part of are you in?

Perhaps between us MNs we can see if that’s a thing.

We always have a roast and grew up having one
my dh is of English / Scottish / Guernsey heritage
and I am Irish heritage.
Our parents were born in the late 1920s / 30s

Jollyjoy · 09/02/2025 16:56

I think this is an English thing and not common in Scotland where I am from - as far as I can judge anecdotally, I'd be interested if others would say the same. I didn't grow up with it and no way would I be fannying about with a big meal on a Sunday!

greengreyblue · 09/02/2025 17:00

Sunday is always an earlier dinner but not as early as lunchtime. Summer tends to be more bbq or summery food and in winter more likely a roast or similar. It works not to eat too late as can get cleared away and start to prepared for the new week

crumblingschools · 09/02/2025 17:03

Most Sundays unless we are in a heatwave 😂 Usually in the evening unless we have family over

Marshbird · 09/02/2025 17:05

Loveduppenguin · 09/02/2025 15:37

Yep, I currently have a ham on. Am doing mashed potatoes, cabbage, carrots and a white sauce. Perfect for a Sunday.

Not lunch though…lunch being lunchtime🤷🏼‍♀️
Sunday tea is what you’re having…like me…I’ve got my Irish stew nearly done.

Sunday dinner no matter what the time I suppose, I’m Irish so as long as it’s Sunday it’s all good 🤣

garlictwist · 09/02/2025 17:08

Had it occasionally as a child and have never done it as an adult. Not really bothered about roast dinners and we are usually either away or out and about at weekends.

ToBoneOrNotToBone · 09/02/2025 17:09

@FreedomandPeace I'm in Scotland (Glasgow) and felt that it was possibly more of an English thing?

Partridgewell · 09/02/2025 17:11

Possibly is an English thing. I have moved around a lot, but always in England.

As a child always and around 12 - 1 pm ish , maybe go over to a salad if really hot in the summer .
Now probably 4 or 5 times a year and early evening .

Fushia123 · 09/02/2025 17:13

My DH and I have started to have Sunday Lunch every Sunday. We cheat though - and take it in turns to choose a different restaurant/pub/place to go each week. Delicious and no washing up!

BeAquaGoose · 09/02/2025 17:14

Every second Sunday we have some form of hearty dinner such as a roast, pie, mash & veg, casserole etc. But not always a roast.
