Sunday lunch - how common in 2025?

Hi all,

Just pondering really and wondered how many of you have a roast dinner most Sundays? I had one almost every Sunday as a child. We have just had roast beef and yorkshire pudding, with raspberry and coconut sponge for pudding. I would say it's very unusual for us to miss one.

Is this still the case in your house? Did you have the same Sunday dinner as a child? Would absolutely love to hear from people whose parents or grandparents are not from the UK - what is your Sunday lunch tradition? Have you incorporated any traditionally British elements over the years?

Growing up we always had a Sunday lunch with extended family - grandparents and sometimes an aunty or uncle or cousins would join too. It was either a roast if it was with my English grandparents or an Italian meal if at my Italian grandparents.

@Ankhmo sounds just like 80s and 90s at my house. Such happy memories - Sundays were the best day of the week!

Before kids I used to really look forward to the day when I’d be able to do the same family get together and special meal. Only my little shits angels aren’t keen on a roast, tend to be a nightmare at the table and the reality is that our parents aren’t the family focused and local folks that my grandparents were. So the reality is we don’t bother all that often.

stargirl1701 · 09/02/2025 21:41

Not lunch but yes roast for Sunday dinner.

Auburngal · 09/02/2025 21:45

As a child, probably had one every 3 weeks with meals such as beef casserole, hunters chicken and similar.

Now I go to my parents all but 4 Sundays a year. Only have 6 roasts a year - beef and gammon.

For those who have BBQs in the summer. what do you have if its pouring with rain?

LostMySocks · 09/02/2025 21:51

We have one every evening through the winter and switch to BBQ or slow roasts in the summer although still have occasional roast
We have an open invitation to family to join us as long as they give us a bit of notice to ensure enough veg and roasties.
I hope that as DS gets old they will feel comfortable to invite friends.

doneandone · 09/02/2025 21:54

We have one most Sundays in winter, didn't have one today though as we went to ikea and had lunch there, I must say it was nice not to have to spend the time prepping, cooking and washing up after!

CorEckIsLike · 09/02/2025 21:54

Never really do it just now and again . Wish it was a thing for that family connection (ie.being invited to parents house for it but they never ask) only meal get asked for is Christmas or new years

We still BBQ, either under the gazebo or in the garage with the door up!
Other days we may just grill/bake whatever it is we're having, fish, kebabs etc.

DanceMumTaxi · 09/02/2025 21:56

I love Sunday lunch but we’re really busy and it’s time consuming, so protege it about once a month. We had a Chinese takeaway tonight.

fashionqueen0123 · 09/02/2025 21:59

Probably once every 3 months? Most Sundays one of the kids is usually at a birthday party at the moment! So don’t have time.

quirkychick · 09/02/2025 22:00

We didn't grow up with it every week (English, but parents quite adventurous with food). I'm more likely to have Sunday Brunch as part of a walk than a roast. Also more like to have a roast in the evening or when out.

SecondMrsTanqueray · 09/02/2025 22:02

I grew up in a home where Sunday lunch was every week, without fail. So did my husband. It would be chicken, pork, beef, lamb, game on rotation.

I would quite happily eat one only on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, but my husband and kids love them, so we might have one every 6 weeks or so. I am not a cook, so if it was down to me, we’d never have one.

strangeandfamiliar · 09/02/2025 22:02

We did as children, but DM was a terrible cook and the atmosphere was always a bit fraught, so it was something rather to be dreaded rather than looked forward to. DMIL's roasts were similar according to DH, so he's not very keen on them either.

I didn't do a big lunch, but usually something a bit 'special' on Sunday evenings when dc were still at home, as we were all busy with sport, hobbies etc during the day. Unusually I did actually do a roast and a crumble today at lunch time, as our oldest decided to visit. It was lovely (I'm a better cook than DM, as she freely admits!) but I wouldn't want to have to do it every week.

OnlyFrench · 09/02/2025 22:03

I live alone and still do a roast on Sunday in the winter. Really enjoy doing them for a big crowd.

JellyBeanFactory · 09/02/2025 22:10

Yes, most Sundays. 9/10 times a roast joint of beef/lamb or chicken with all the trimmings.

If short of time for example, at the very least chops with roast potatoes and veg to make it feel a Sunday roast!

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 09/02/2025 22:11

Most Sundays without fail . Even in summer unless it's over 23 degrees then no... but yes absolutely we don't really skip them ...I Loved it as a child and my children were weaned on them and grandson love my roast dinners too . We do sometimes go out ... what they charge and for how much I can knock up a decent one for ... I can do better.
Gammon would probably be least on the list but we certainly have mostly.
Chicken
Beef
Lamb
Pork with crackling
Turkey when I can get it

Tanktanktank · 09/02/2025 22:27

My mum cooks the full roast on Sunday, cold meat and mash on Monday (with pickles) and fish on Friday. However, I cook roast type meals at least three times a week but never on a Sunday.

You want to get yourself an air fryer and then you can sit inside. Grin

mitogoshigg · 09/02/2025 22:33

Couple of times a month at least during the winter, less in summer (I'll cook a spatchcock chicken and serve with salad more typically when it's warmer)

mitogoshigg · 09/02/2025 22:35

Though today I cooked curry from scratch instead which is more effort than a roast but I do like doing it

obsessedwithfreshbread · 09/02/2025 22:36

@PuppyMonkey
One of our BBQ's doubles as an air-fryer .. perfect for camping Smile

Some dishes need the lovely smoky taste and aroma so it's worth it sometimes, and if it's on the ninja then can switch it in and just keep popping to check it

rivalsbinge · 09/02/2025 22:38

We have it at tea time 5ish so we can all get on with our days. But in the winter 80% of Sundays.

Copperoliverbear · 09/02/2025 22:39

As a child every week, now once a fortnight as husband works some Sundays and maybe only once a month in the summer as we tend to have salad with cold meats, potatoes ect.

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/02/2025 22:42

I do a roast most Sundays but not at lunchtime.

Sodullincomparison · 09/02/2025 22:46

DH is obsessed with roast dinners. If anyone is visiting it’s the chance to buy a joint, spend hours making gravy and use every pan and roasting tray in the house.

I grew up with a roast every Sunday and avoided them for 15 years from leaving home and meeting DH.

I made a Cottage Pie today with three different veg so that was approved and I make little roast potatoes once a fortnight with different meals.

DH and DD6 will always go to a carvery if I’m away for work. They are United in their love for gravy soaked veg.
