Appetite reducing with age?

I'm post-menopausal (surgical menopause at 48) & I'm currently age 55.

I've noticed that my appetite has changed substantially in recent years. I'm not particularly worried, I'm just interested whether this is (yet another) significant change as I am getting older.

I can eat a normal meal (smaller size portions but still a meal) at home but when we eat out, there is no way I could manage to eat a three course meal.
I can easily miss meals during day working from home, whereas I would eat at every meal time when I was younger.

I now prefer tapas & 'street' food due to smaller portions.
I also want fresher, lighter food & struggle with rich or heavy meals.

Is it just a product of age - has anyone else noticed this?

Yep, I eat about 40% less than I used to eat pre middle age (now nearly 60..) I have eaten less gradually over the last 10 years. Me and DH have 1 cod and 1 bag of chips between us from the chippy. (And 1 pot of curry sauce or mushy peas.) 1 of each is far too much. We also share a curry, rice, and chips, from the Chinese takeaway. Used to have 1 each!

Inexplicably we're still overweight!! (About 3 stone each.) Can't shift it! I don't think we can eat much less really! Need to get more walking in I think!

Absolutely- I need significantly less food these days (I'm 53) than I used to.

If we go out for lunch, I won't be hungry again til the next morning. On a normal evening I only need a small amount of food and when it's just DH and me at home we don't eat carbs at dinner because we just dont need them any more.

I'm the same, I don't eat the quantity of food I used to pre-menopause. Breakfast is fresh juice /smoothie and high protein yoghurt; I nibble through the day (nuts, fruit, mini bars of chocolate) and my evening meal is a usually a pasta dish with salad. I think it's just an age thing.

Yes, I'm very much the same and I have very little appetite and am rarely hungry
I eat one meal a day. I live alone so can please myself
Will often have a bowl of granola with greek yogurt and added nuts if I can't face a cooked meal
I'm 60 now but have been like this for years.
I think it's normal so as long as you feel well in yourself it's fine

This is so reassuring!
I thought it was just me.
Now I need to work out how to actually lose weight despite smaller meals!

Sadly not true for me

sp1ders · 08/02/2025 23:39

I can't really eat a proper meal anymore and tend to have smaller quantities of food now. I need to lose weight so it's a good thing. I hate cooking so just have small stuff like omellets, crackers and cheese, fruit, yoghurts etc.
