I did the 5/2 diet for years, found it worked well for my lifestyle as could still enjoy treats, meals out etc and just choose 2 days a week to be really strict. I'm quite an all-or-nothing person so worked fine for me, I figured out a menu I could eat those days and stuck to it. Typically:
Breakfast: coffee
Lunch: salad (no dressing) + prawns, miso soup
Snack: apple, salt and vinegar rice cakes
Dinner: baked eggs in tomato sauce

I would be hungry on those days but distracted myself with activities like yoga and also knowing it's just one day!

After having my first child I needed to lose weight again but knew I couldn't stick to that regime with sleep deprivation and no time to myself so I joined slimming world. In 6 months I lost 2.5 stone and another 0.5 over the following 6 months, had no trouble sticking to my target weight after that, it does teach quite good habits and the weigh ins make you accountable.

Ihatejanuary78 · 08/02/2025 11:56

I don’t really drink.
i have used nutracheck before so will use that again.

I use my fit bit to track calories used and log my food for calories in then I can stay in calories deficit. Currently doing this to deal with extra kilos from Christmas over eating and January eating things up over eating!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 08/02/2025 11:56

Intermittent fasting and giving up white pasta and bread during the week. Weekends I do what I want.

I've lost 4lbs in 10 days doing low carb.im 45 and it's the only thing that works

Femalefootyfan · 08/02/2025 11:59

Hired an online PT for a year who devised a programme for me, calorie counting using MFP, daily walks and three workouts per week. Weekly weigh in, measurements and photos to track my progress.
I no longer use the PT but still calorie count (most days), no longer do the workouts but go to a dance class weekly and walk anything between 3-5 miles daily.
Lost 3 stones which was a bit too much so I’ve put roughly half a stone back on, which I’m ok with although I’d prefer to lose around 4lbs.

I too gained weight over the menopause and struggled to lose it. I am now on week 4 of the Human Being diet ( there is a thread on here) and am thrilled that I have lost 9lbs! It is also a healthy diet eating proper food so glad I found it. The first 16 days are tough but worth sticking with it. Good luck!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/02/2025 12:03

Ate less, and healthier, and moved more. Cooking from scratch, less bread, more protein and fibre, weight bearing exercise (need to find the thing you enjoy or hate the least). I have about a stone to go, and have been a bit off the boil, but when I stick to it, the weight comes off slowly and steadily and most importantly stays off. Still indulge in alcohol and snacks, and no real restrictions (apart for treat food becoming an occasional treat rather than an everyday treat).

taxguru · 08/02/2025 12:05

I've lost around 8 stone over 15 years by moving more and eating less. Now doing at least 8k steps per day (and using a standing desk on days I can't walk due to bad weather etc) and really reduced processed/crap/carb foods and snacks. Been a very slow slog of just losing the odd pound or two every month, but at least it's been a consistent downward trend.

I gave up on yo yo and fad diets as they just don't work - they're not sustainable and the pounds pile back on once you return to normal eating. Far better to just take it gradually at a level you can sustain for the longer term.

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/02/2025 12:06

I’m in peri. I signed up with a PT for a year & now carry on 3 mornings a week with the weights & cardio plan she designed for me, plus weekly Zumba & yoga classes.

I’m veggie, cook nearly all my meals from scratch & (usually) limit treats to a weekly piece of cake after Zumba. I have fruit & nuts for snacking.

Over the past year my body fat’s dropped by 15%, muscle mass is up by 12% and weight’s down by 5% so something’s obviously working.

I’m paying more attention to fat than weight since I’m trying to build muscle mass at the same time.

Yawnandstretch · 08/02/2025 12:07

I know there are some negative reviews on here about this, but I have been following the glucose goddess’ 10 hacks for the last 2 weeks and have lost 9lbs. I don’t envisage this pace to continue but it’s a motivating start. I am also breastfeeding so that might have contributed to the quick weight loss but my baby is nearly 1 and I’ve not lost any weight prior to this so can’t have helped that much!

Ihatejanuary78 · 08/02/2025 12:19

What are the 10 hacks?

OP posts:
Yawnandstretch · 08/02/2025 12:22

HACK 1
Eat foods in the right order
The right order to eat our food is: 1) Fiber, 2) Protein and fats, 3) Starches and sugars.
HACK 2
Veggie starters
It will reduce the glucose spike of the meal that follows. The veggie starter has to make up about 30% of the meal.
HACK 3
Stop counting calories
Counting calories doesn’t necessarily improve health outcomes. And not all calories are equal: calories derived from fructose are more detrimental than those from glucose.
HACK 4
Savoury Breakfast
A savoury breakfast is composed of protein (the centerpiece), fat, fiber (if possible), optional starches, and nothing sweet except optional whole fruit (just for taste).
HACK 5
Have any type of sugar, they’re all the same
All sugar is made of glucose and fructose. They all have the same impact on our body, so have the one you prefer.
HACK 6
Pick dessert over a sweet snack
If we want to eat something sweet, it’s better for our glucose spikes to have it as dessert after a meal than as a snack between meals.
HACK 7
Vinegar
Vinegar can be taken as one tablespoon in a tall glass of water (with a straw), or as a salad dressing, ideally up to 20 minutes before a meal. This reduces the spike of the meal by up to 30%.
HACK 8
After you eat, move
When you can, use your muscles for 10 minutes to reduce the glucose spike of the meal. Examples: walking, tidying your house, doing calf raises, etc.
HACK 9
If you have to snack, go savoury
Sweet snacks give us pleasure, savoury snacks give us energy. Savoury snacks include proteins, healthy fats, and fiber.
HACK 10
Put “clothes” on your carbs
Putting “clothes” on our carbs means adding protein, fat, or fiber to starches and sugars. This reduces the speed of glucose absorption in our body.

just copied and pasted that from the email - she has a tv programme on channel 4 and a couple of books out. I aim to follow 100% of time but probably manage 80%. I don’t know if it will work long term but I am amazed at how I’m not snacking anymore or craving sugar at all.

MyMyMySharona · 08/02/2025 12:24

Hi, not read the whole thread.

My "success" at weight loss is down to going plantbased back at 1/1/14.

I also went on a regime of drinking organic apple cider vinegar (with the mother) Aldi or Lidl roughly £1.99 500ml, as my first thing in the morning drink, I have it warm, as that's less harsh on the tummy, and especially comforting in the cooler months.

I also cut out biscuits crisps and general stuff I know that is bad.
I didn't ever eat excesses of those things, but obviously none is better than a some.

To tone up I use a rebounder (six legs pref') for at least 20 mins, preferably 40 mins.

For strength, I lift weights, I also use weights to make a non weight exercise, harder.

I'm in my seventies now, and I'm 5'6" and weigh approx 9stone ... I was pushing 11stone before I changed my lifestyle.

I'm not at all advocating that what I do is right for everyone, I'm only saying what I did to both lose weight, and get reasonably fit.
Both are to remain as independent as I can, and not rely on anyone else.

The important word being rely, as I'm not averse to someone cooking me a nice meal, or helping me garden.
I just want to know, that I could do it myself, if no one were kind enough to offer.

Good luck to all who battle with their bodies 👍

ThriveIn2025 · 08/02/2025 12:28

Put on 6 stone after DC over about 4 years. Lost it all and have kept it off by using Apple Watch rings. One day I just decided I was going to hit the calorie and exercise targets. Every time the watch suggested I raise the targets I did and I didn’t miss a day unless I was ill. Once I hit my goal weight I stopped increasing the targets (although it still prompts me to). I still hit them everyday. Last night I was on the treadmill at 9pm because I’d been at my desk all day and wouldn’t have closed the rings otherwise.

I know it all sounds a bit bonkers but it worked for me!

TimPat · 08/02/2025 12:28

Calorie counting and joined the gym. Stopped making excuses to myself about not having time and forced myself to carve out the time.
For me, no carb/keto wouldn't be sustainable although it works for others, I know I would crack and binge if I didn't allow myself a little.
I've lost 4st 9lb, I am to be within a half stone bracket allowing myself a little leeway for fluctuations, I'm currently in the higher end of that bracket.

JudgeBread · 08/02/2025 12:28

I realise this is probably not viable but I became a postie, changed absolutely nothing about my quite shit diet (I'm a pringles addict) and was effortlessly dropping a pound a week. When I actually put in effort to reduce my carb and sugar intake it started dropping off 2-3lbs a week.

So yeah if you can fit in 10-15 miles a day of brisk walking while carrying a heavy bag you'll be golden 🙃 otherwise it'll probably be low carb and calorie counting!

Thank you all, some great ideas.
im pre diabetic so low carb is good for me but its hard, and if I don’t have chocolate or bread sometimes I will end up having a massive binge. So I can’t go all out low carb/keto but can definitely try.
i would love to lose a stone before my holiday in mid April. I do like intermittent fasting and calorie counting.
I exercise regularly anyway but my c section over hang is upsetting so be good to lose belly fat.
end of last year I did lose some weight but it all went back on. And I can’t really think what I did?!

I am also prediabetic which is why I chose the HB diet as it is tailored towards low blood sugar. It is low carb and I love carbs but am coping easily … I have surprised myself and after the first 16 days you can have a treat meal once a week!

Signed up for Zoe and found out which foods suit my body best. I am now eating a diet rich in vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds. I am now only occasionally eating potatoes, pasta and bread because I found out from Zoe I have poor blood sugar control and anything high in carbs gives me more of a blood sugar spike than most people would have. Unfortunately I also have poor blood fat control so I now only eat very little cheese.

It has really worked. I never feel hungry. I have lost 15kg of 2.4 stone since early November. I have lost lots of belly fat - my waist has gone down by 15cm. Absolutely no exercise either because I am too unwell to exercise.

Ditto.

Two years in now and haven't been this slim since my 20's (am in my 70's) Eating fabulous foods, never hungry, lost all the belly fat and now have a healthy waist:height ratio. LOVING this way of eating, never think of calories, lost over a stone.

I don't know if this would work for you, but since I began exercising, I'm less likely to over eat, coz I don't want to "undo" any good I did through the exercising.

Ihatejanuary78 · 08/02/2025 12:51

I do a lot of exercise and sometimes that mindset does work!

Ate healthier and exercised more'

Exactly.

I put on weight after having major surgery and spending 3 months stuck at home recovering.

I went vegetarian and my GP referred me to my local gym with whom they had a partnership (people with certain conditions qualified for cheaper membership and one to one support) and I had a trainer that put an exercise plan for me together and then I met up with her every month for 3 months or so to look at my progress.

Since then I have been able to maintain a decent weight by exercising regularly and sticky to a healthy diet. Also no alcohol or take aways.

TeenToTwenties · 08/02/2025 11:01

I lost 5 stone on keto. So very low carb, high protein.

Keto is high fat, some protein and low carb.

Floralnomad · 08/02/2025 13:55

@Ihatejanuary78 you could always try low carb bread and chocolate if you really can’t just avoid them but honestly if you avoid them for long enough you really won’t miss them . I have the odd Heylo loaf so I can have toast occasionally .
