Really sore neck developed after strep throat - help!

Dd (20) home from uni. She had strep throat 2 weeks ago, v sore neck plus sore throat, fever. Just had ten days of antibiotics -110 antibiotics - and her neck is really sore again today - the sides and nape. Hurts to move, can't touch chin to chest.

That's her only symptom. Her throat is fine (she saw a nurse this morning).

Do you think she needs to see a GP? Is this sore neck normal after strep throat? (Strep confirmed by test)

It was fine up to lunchtime and has come on v suddenly.

I'm scared of meningitis.

Can she taste any strep again? It has a very distinct taste?

BellissimoGecko · 07/02/2025 19:32

Will ask!

She might need more antibiotics- I had strep just before Christmas and needed 3 rounds to get rid of it fully. Took ages for my glands to go down

If so straight back for antibiotics. I had to have four sets in autumn!

If you leave it too long in first instance then it can get deep in your tonsils and be hard to cure.

Also throw out the toothbrushes and use cheap disposables for the duration of the anti b’s.

@Toddlerhelpplease123 why

Why what 😂

Can't touch chin to chest, I think you need to get to A&E and get a blood check for meningitis. It probably isn't (could be glandular fever for example - I couldn't do that) but it's not worth the risk.

My friend was like that with (viral) meningitis, so don't wait and see for other symptoms (rash, for example is a very late symptom if it comes at all)

Why change tooth brush

BellissimoGecko · 07/02/2025 21:30

At urgent care now

Check for oral thrush after 10 days of antibiotics and change her toothbrush

Scentedjasmin · 07/02/2025 21:36

My husband and I both had a strep A throat infection. His, unfortunately turned to sepsis. His first symptom, aside from the sore throat, was a temperature, lethargy and a stiff sore neck. Later on the stiffness and pain spread to his torso and he developed chronic diarrhoea. His skin also looked very red, like sunburn. I'm sure that your daughter probably just has a bad throat, but do google the symptoms of Sepsis, just in case things change. It never occurred to me that you could get it from a sore throat.

BellissimoGecko · 07/02/2025 22:35

She has thrush too. Good tip about the toothbrush!

Been triaged and given painkillers. Clinician didn't think it was meningitis. Waiting to see doc now.

Well done! Glad it’s nothing serious!

She will feel much better within 24 hours. But absolutely keep going back if needs be. It seems many have had to have multiple courses this winter to clear it.

I honestly don’t even know whether I did clear it or just became a carrier in the end 😂

But it doesn’t affect me any longer either way. Horrible thing it is!

The second lot of ABs don't agree with dd. She has been feeling very sick and having stomach pains all day. Rang 111 again and have been waiting for a callback since 4pm!

FFS

Oh no - are they clarithromycin? I hope you can get some alternatives. I also had an allergic reaction to one set when I had 3 to clear my strep

INeedNewShoes · 09/02/2025 08:00

DD has issues with antibiotics and nausea. It makes a significant difference if she takes them immediately after a meal.

Aside from that though the Strep that hasn't gone away could also be making her feel unwell. If you or your DD feel really concerned at any point go to A&E.

I didn’t realise how important it was to eat properly first. I was taking mine with a biscuit and felt sick as a dog. Try and get a bit more food in before the tablets.

BellissimoGecko · 09/02/2025 19:06

Dd knows how to take ABs - unfortunately she's had lots of them for tonsillitis.

She now has a prescription for phenoxymethylpenicillin again.

The AB she reacted to was erythromycin. And they made her feel so sick she couldn't face food.

111 was pretty unhelpful. Took 24 hours for them to call back and prescribe different ABs. They called dd at 1am to say she was in the queue (wtf?) then a clinician called at 8.30sm today, but couldn't prescribe. What's the point?

OP posts:
myplace · 09/02/2025 21:26

How frustrating! But you managed to get her sorted?

I thought I knew how, hadn’t had trouble before. I don’t know whether my eating habits had changed or what, but I was properly caught out.
