Applying for british citizenship

EasterIssland · 07/02/2025 10:40

Hi
question for those mn that have applied for British citizenship and that don’t belong to a country from the commonwealth or studied in the UK. I’ve seen you need to proof your English level by taking an exam.
I really don’t want to put myself to study grammar as already have to study for the life in the UK test.

has anyone taken a B1 exam? Did you find it easy to take without studying? I’ve been in this country for 15 years so I should be able to pass higher ones but concerned about failing here because probably the way we all talk / write is not what Cambridge expects you to and there and my main goal is the life in the UK test.

thanks.

@NormaleKartoffeln I checked your.other threads. You seem quite ok on them so I logically wonder what is bugging you on this op?

Of course you didn't have to write that comment either. 😵‍💫

I am again wondering if it's your first day on the internet......

Perhaps what's bugging her on this thread is that she came and asked a single simple question (probably with know I'll will intended) and was met with an onslaught of snide, patronising and even abusive responses?
For all anyone here knew, she was just curious or wanting to offer specific advice, but posters assumed immediate moral superiority.
She's now been called a bad person and even a cunt as a result.

Don’t think anyone has called the poster a cunt.
however, their first comment on the thread sounded quite patronising and so another few comments to my reply (even when I replied directly as to why I’m considering the citizenship)

it doesn’t matter why I want the citizenship. I don’t have to justify it to anyone but to myself. I only have to pay 2k and I’ll have it. Each person will have their own reasons. Several posters have given me advice : my b2 can’t be used as it’s from 20 years ago and the English level exam is quite easy if you’re used to having conversations in English in your day to day, which was the reason for the thread.

I’ll continue learning for life in the uk test as I keep getting 60% which is not enough. My passport doesn’t expire in 2 years so I might delay it until then as I’ll have to go to the embassy to get the passport and I can ask them. They’re useless and not helpful in my embassy and I don’t want to loose my birth citizenship (which my son also has) but I’d like to have both if possible and I’m not 100% sure if my country allows this. I could probably join the fb group a poster suggested and ask those from my country.

OP she was called a silly cunt. I read it myself.

I don't really care about your citizenship (not in a rude way but it's just not relevant to what I was saying) this is a discussion board and a poster asked a single question. You may not want to answer it which is fine and you could just say "I don't really want to get into that on this thread" or something similar. But it's not nice for a load of posters to jump in with their own interpretation of her question and use it to patronise and abuse her. It's not on, if someone suspects her question had an ulterior motive they could have asked her in a polite way for clarity.

And just for context, my response was to another poster who asked why she seemed to have a bee in her bonnet on this particular thread when she seems fine on other threads. I was just offering my idea of why she may have become defensive and argumentative after her initial post.

You should be able to easily google if your country allows dual citizenship. In EU only few don't allow freely but just under certain circumstances
I believe even Germany now allows it without having to give up German one.

That’s the thing I ask google and they say I can’t become Spanish and I’d need to give up my British nationality because Spain doesn’t allow it. But this is the opposite. I’ve Spanish passport and want to know whether I can also obtain the British. My son has got both but when he’s 18 has to decide whether he wants to keep the Spanish one

My Spanish neighbour and her kids have both. One kid is over 18.

HipMax · 08/02/2025 15:01

Many countries who say they don't allow dual citizenship gave no real way of knowing what you apply for, and don't actually care anyway. It's extremely common to have dual citizenship of countries that don't technically allow it.
Also it can depend when and how you get it and in what order you do it in. For example if you're Spanish you can get another citizenship, they just still treat you as only Spanish. But if you want to acquire Spanish citizenship you are supposed to give up your previous citizenship. Although not always.

It's complicated.

It’s and the Spanish embassy in London is the most useless embassy around the world so can’t even email / call them to know the answer as they won’t reply

I don't recall asking you either.

If you wanted a personal conversation with the OP you should have PM’d her.

This is a public forum and fair game.

Mum has found my b2 certificate ❤ thanks god for that! Thanks all for the help and the praises about the English

Great. Good luck with the citizenship test. I did it for Germany 2 years ago. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
