Applying for british citizenship

EasterIssland · 07/02/2025 10:40

Hi
question for those mn that have applied for British citizenship and that don’t belong to a country from the commonwealth or studied in the UK. I’ve seen you need to proof your English level by taking an exam.
I really don’t want to put myself to study grammar as already have to study for the life in the UK test.

has anyone taken a B1 exam? Did you find it easy to take without studying? I’ve been in this country for 15 years so I should be able to pass higher ones but concerned about failing here because probably the way we all talk / write is not what Cambridge expects you to and there and my main goal is the life in the UK test.

thanks.

I went through this process a few years ago as a native English speaker and having lived in the UK for almost 20 years. Clearly my thinking isn’t as good as my speaking because I ended up doing the test. The poor examiner realised after about 2 minutes that we were both wasting our time 🤣 It’s just a chat OP, you’ll be absolutely fine.

DH did say the examiner was quite fun once he realised he speaks absolutely fluently 😂 They had a nice chat about businesses and city we lived in because he did it in different one etc.
I had that at LITUK when they security realised I am fluent. I spent 15 min aftet with him moaning about the test😂

I did an IELTS test back in the day. I found it easy and didn't need any revision, but I did have intensive English grammar lessons at school.

Life in the UK was easier in the test centre than the practice questions, but I may just have been lucky, because I just don't care who won a gold medal a specific sport when I was still a teenager, or the name of an architect of a random landmark, so I concentrated on history, politics and culture in general.

Again, I didn't ask you.
OP is asking how to get it, so assume there is some level of need.

No sweetie, I asked you a question.
New to the internet?

Yes have settled status

EasterIssland · 07/02/2025 16:30

I’ve given you 2 answers about why I’m thinking about getting it (and I’ve posted another one when replying to another person)

Edited

Good luck applying (I guess you don't have to justify it to me, but you might need actual reasons when applying).

Again, you're confused. I haven't given you an opinion. I have asked you a question though. Are you going to answer it?

It really is a bit cruel that you've been allowed on this public site without anyone explaining to you how it works.

I don’t even have to justify it to the government. Just have to do a test or 2 and pay for it. No justification as to why it’s needed/wanted.

We did the language test for citizenship. We were educated from Scandinavian universities and had lived and worked in UK for 15 years at the time. It wasn't hard at all.
We and the children hold dual citizenship now.

Yes, that was a bemusing post.

In any case, if you did require advice on what needs including on your citizenship application, as opposed to asking for experiences of an English test, you'd clearly want to go to a regulated provider rather than a random on Mumsnet. There are actually rather strict rules on who's allowed to advise on these matters.

yes exactly! The only thing we needed to justify was the ££££ fees to ourselves😂. For us it was over £6000 and I heard that they increased the fees again!

As for the life in the uk test, I find the youtue mock tests really helpful. We spent one week learning and a few nights going through the tests. On the way to the test we were still listenning to questions and answers in the car and some of those questions were exactly the same as in our test. We went in and out within 5 mins and I was sure I got 100%.

Good luck!

Yes it is on FB. OP search “Forum for EU Citizens (3 million)”, it’s very valuable if you have any questions regarding the application.

I went through the process in 2022, after living in the UK for 25 years. It’s a huge peace of mind, being the citizen now. I also have my birth country’s citizenship as do my DC.

One note about the language test. It doesn’t concern you OP anymore but if anyone else is looking for the info. You can do the language test through Trinity College or Pearson. Trinity College is the one that everybody here refers to, where you just chat and that’s it. But I, in my wisdom booked my test with Pearson. It was awful. All through the computer, I had to repeat long sentences, which I really struggled with. By the time the example sentence had finished, I had forgotten how it bloody started! Reader, I did pass but it was awful and would have loved the Trinity College method.
