Applying for british citizenship

EasterIssland · 07/02/2025 10:40

Hi
question for those mn that have applied for British citizenship and that don’t belong to a country from the commonwealth or studied in the UK. I’ve seen you need to proof your English level by taking an exam.
I really don’t want to put myself to study grammar as already have to study for the life in the UK test.

has anyone taken a B1 exam? Did you find it easy to take without studying? I’ve been in this country for 15 years so I should be able to pass higher ones but concerned about failing here because probably the way we all talk / write is not what Cambridge expects you to and there and my main goal is the life in the UK test.

thanks.

Why do you need UK citizenship?

What has that got to do with the question asked, and who said OP needed it?

Why do you need UK citizenship?

How is that relevant?

Oh it doesn’t say it in their website anything like that 🤦🏻‍♀️ also realised I might need to give up my passports as not sure they allowed dual 🤦🏻‍♀️
Yes have settled status

As pp said you don't unless your country requires it. Then consider very carefully if it's worth it.
I don't know whete you are from, I get why someone on visa or EUSS would want it (with EUSS randomly disappearing and I call it Windrush 2.0), but if you have very good EU passport... I wouldn't give it up. Just wait, they might change rules.
My EU passport gives me longer visa free time in some countries to UK one. Plus the right to live and/or work in EU of course, which is massive.

Check the rules kf your country. Sometimes there are exceptions like marriage etc

NormaleKartoffeln · 07/02/2025 14:41

I don't think I was asking you.

As EU getting passport I can tell you why many get it. Because our permanent status is a fucking technological disaster and people lost jobs and opportunities because of it after paying taxes for decades.
Plus rules can change and it can become bye bye very quickly.

I know what you mean. I just had to go through some financial applications and I’ve to proof who I’m because I’m not British so that’s one of the reasons why I’d love a British passport , the mental drain of proving who you say you’re and waiting for someone to tell you that you’re good enough

the other reason(fear) is someone like trump arriving to this country and trying to get rid of those without the British passport

I don’t need a British passport, but makes life so much easier in some scenarios… and also can’t apply to some of the jobs as I’m not a British national

DH did this last year. He is French and had worked in 2 English speaking countries for years, speaks English fluently but his qualifications are all French. For the citizenship he had to take a test, it was really easy, he had been asked to have a conversation with another applicant. If you can have normal conversations in English you will be fine even if you have an accent or make some small mistakes. There is no need to study for it.

Yup. It makes many things easier.

I am still gobsmacked when I read here that people can open bank accounts without photo ID😂 Wtf. We need ID and status nearly for simply farting😂

They’d be unfortunately and whilst my English is good after 15 years (thanks for the comment by the way) I also know I make mistakes which I’d prefer to avoid as my aim is not this exam but the citizenship this is just something that is required to be able to apply

It’s not a written exam. You talk for 15-20mins about yourself and your life. Super easy. If you can’t do that after 15 years, you shouldn’t apply for citizenship.

EasterIssland · 07/02/2025 15:15

You were asking me. Not sure what your question has to do with my question so I did ignore it. Each person will have their reasons.
for me that a twat like trump arrives to this country and changes the rules for those with settled status and makes me lose my son, my husband and my house despite all the years in this country is a reason.
anifher one is the discrimination that I face for not being able to apply to a job because I don’t have the citizenship despite im good enough for the role or otherwise I’d not be doing similar roles in a other companies

Thanks. I could probably try for a c1/c2 and obtain it but I know that would take time to prepare it whilst a b1 is more basic and it’s the lowest level required for the citizenship application. I’d rather spend my time learning about who was the son of Edward or how many MPs are in the Scottish parliament as there is another test that is required and I tend to have around 60% pass mark which is not enough

you overcomplicating and overthinking things. You don’t need C1, just pay £100, go to a test centre, chat for 20mins and get the certificate.

also there is no choice what you would rather. You need to do Life in the Uk and a language test

Yeah that’s ok :) that’s what I want to avoid the c1 etc.

I did the test around 5 years ago and my dh as well . If nothing is changed, it's very easy. Based on how you write here, you will have no issue passing.

For the life in the uk test, there is a website that has ALL the questions (self reported by people that took the test). Just keep doing practice tests from there. Sorry, I don't have the link anymore.

Just make sure you quadruple check your application as it's soooo expensive and they can reject for the most trivial of reasons...

Good luck!

You can’t submit an old certificate btw. Only authorised test centres and less than 2 years old. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/669f7e1e49b9c0597fdb023d/Guide+AN+-+July+2024.pdf

Most do😂 I sent practice test to my colleagues 😂

It's fine if you fail LITUK btw. I did by a point, so just re-sat it and it was fine. 50 lighter, but fine. Don't stress it like I did😂 That's ehy I failed
