Possible to unlock a phone with forgotten pattern access

GreenRedOrangeAlert · 05/02/2025 22:23

Sorry for posting here but can I hack the hive mind. My daughter changed her phone to a pattern and is now locked out of it. I have parent controls but they only work for a number password. It's a basic Samsung smart phone. Has anyone managed to get back in without factory reset. She has lovely photos of my Mom and we'll lose them all if we wipe it all.
Praying for a miracle xxx

Does she have automatic back up turned on? If so just factory reset it, everything will still be there.

If not..there's honestly not much you can do. Phones are so secure and difficult to bypass these days. Even visiting a Samsung service center, all they can do is factory reset it.

@ThatUniqueKoala ahh thanks for replying, sadly no so I think it will all be lost.

What's the exact model? I might be able to find some information or at least find out if it has a recovery bios option/access sequence

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/02/2025 23:24

I may be way off the mark so apologies but if you plug it into a laptop does it let you transfer photos?

GreenRedOrangeAlert · 05/02/2025 23:30

It's A34. Hopefully you will find something. I have tried every forum and site I could find and reset seems the only option.
We are linked thro Google family link and I can generate a code to unlock but then can't use it on the pattern format.

No sadly. I can see it but not pull anything across. Thanks tho @Sunshineandrainbow

There are forensic tools that can kind of deal with this (GrayKey and Cellbrite), but only law enforcement have access to this.

You cannot pull anything across because the phone is encrypted and needs to be unlocked. Phones can be hacked but it's very very hard and requires tools only law enforcement have.

Can you open them at all and screenshot them?

otherwise, how long ago did she change it - if it’s giving the option of still putting a code in then take a break for a day then just pick it up and try again more relaxed….worked with m 13yo…several times 😂

otherwise no there’s not really much you can do sadly

Can you try changing the code family link is giving you into a pattern? So 2 would be the 2nd dot on the top row etc. Also try swiping the screen up once you have requested the parental code

Hayley1256 · 06/02/2025 00:31

Also in family link you should he able to change the lock screen code if you click on the device name then go to lock screen settings

GreenRedOrangeAlert · 06/02/2025 07:48

Thank you all so much. I've learnt more about parental controls in the last 24 hours than I ever want to know! Two problems and if i could solve one id be sorted.
Theres no option for me as parent to get into her phone even tho im supervisor
Theres no option in Google family link to generate a pattern and it only gives a code based on numbers 0 to 9 whereas the pattern is 1 to 9. Word of warning don't use family link find something else!

Shameless bump just in case an IT expert have joined us today.

What options are you getting when you click on the device name in family link? It should show in controls

GreenRedOrangeAlert · 06/02/2025 09:45

@Hayley1256 I can see the options really locking the phone and i can generate a code in numbers to unlock but she changed it to a pattern and is don't have an option to generate a pattern to unlock.
I also don't have an option on her phone to log in as a parent. It looks like the Google controls don't work for pattern related lock outs.

I only get the parent access code option by clicking the 3 lines in the top left corner. Instead of doing that if you go to controls at the bottom (next to highlights) it should either load up the devices you have linked (in which case click on her phone) or if there is only one device it should come up with options of Lock Screen settings, App permissions or Location sharing?

I know nothing about Samsung phones as I always have an iPhone but I have found that EE shops often have phone 'nerds' for want of a better description who love to help.

If you're not with EE then perhaps your service provider may offer some help?

Meanwhile I found this but I have NO idea if it's accurate or not -

You’ll be allowed to draw the wrong pattern five times, and the sixth is locked. And then you will see a message “You have incorrectly drawn your unlock pattern 5 times. Try again in 30 seconds.” In this way, you can use your Google Account to unlock your Samsung Phone when forgetting the pattern. Supports only Android 4.4 or lower.
Step 1. Draw a wrong pattern 5 times on your Samsung phone.
Step 2. Tap Forgot pattern.
Step 3. Enter your Google Account and password.
Step 4. Once you have signed in, you can set a new PIN, pattern or password to reset the forgot pattern.

Bumping for you, I hope you can save the photos.

GreenRedOrangeAlert · 06/02/2025 11:15

Thanks everyone this is Mumsnet at its best! Been into our local IT expert and this is a message worth sharing. The pattern access blocks you from all the parental resets in google family and can't be overridden. It is the most frequent cause of lockouts as you are blocked if you only use fingerprint across 72hours and then at next entry don't use the correct pattern. FFS. Its a harsh lesson and won't be forgotten.
