Should I keep these shares?

National Grid and Shell worth around 6k today I am told. No urgent need for the capital. If I did sell them would probably buy premium bonds.
Aware environmental issues etc. Must emphasise not my choice, but can either be sold or transferred to me from an estate.

I would hold onto them. It's difficult to be lucky with premium bonds with such a relatively small amount so I would keep hold of them and hope they went up.

So the shares are currently part of a deceased person's estate? Have you looked at the dividend amount paid out by those companies this year to see roughly what sort of income they would make you. More than likely not a lot but the 0% tax allowance on dividends is getting smaller so if that trend continues eventually you may be taxed on the dividends. Also if you get the shares then sell them in the future you will need to pay CGT on the gain if it's above the annual allowance at the time. It's probably easier just to let the estate sell them and pocket the cash tbh.

Thank you. I have decided to keep them and use the little bit of dividend for a family treat each year in memory if the kind person who unexpectedly left them to me.
