What happens with a direct debit

Last week my brother asked if I could give him £20 until today, I said yes as long as I got it back today because it's for a direct debit that is coming out tomorrow (I get paid on the 6th which is why I needed the £20 back today..)

He's let me down.

What will happen with my direct debit? I get paid the day after its due out. Asking because I have never missed a payment before so not sure what's going to happen, if the money isn't in on the 5th will they just try to take the money again on the 6th or will I need to contact them?

They might re-apply but no guarantee, be careful though a lot of places charge you for missed payments. Get in touch and let them know it won’t be paid and see what they say.

It's not guaranteed they'll reattempt. You should call the company you're paying and explain you'll need to make the payment on 6th instead of 5th this month. They might not be able to stop the DD attempt tomorrow, but at least you've contacted them and they'll be able to put a note on your account.

It'll be worth asking about changing the payment date for future months, make it just after pay day instead of just before.
