HMRC paying self assessment

I signed into the government gateway online last week and set up a payment plan to pay my self-assessment. It said that the first payment would be taken on 1st February. No payment has been taken so I logged into the portal and there is no record of anything set up which means I'm now overdue.

I have no idea what has happened. In hindsight, I would have thought I'd have received a confirmation email but I can't find anything. I will call HMRC tomorrow but I will worry about it tonight. I clearly remember seeing the confirmation of dates for payments and the amounts to be taken. I am so confused.

Has anyone else had this and will I be able to appeal any fine?

I didn’t know you could set up a payment plan? Tax is due by the 31st, and you’ve had since April to complete your return and plan how to pay it.
I’ve never noticed a payment plan option, but havn’t looked for one so I guess this is a big gap in my understanding! But are you 100% sure there was a payment plan option and that you were on the real government gateway site?

I don’t know how payment plans work for it, but I read a BBC news article on people missing the self assessment deadline facing fines, which specifically mentioned that fines wouldn’t be made for late payment just yet:
Although the payment deadline was 31 January, late payment penalties are not applied until 1 March.
hopefully that puts your mind at ease for now, while you get it sorted.

Thousands of people left it to the last minute before the cut-off at the end of Friday.

Thanks for the replies. I phoned HMRC this morning - I had indeed set up a payment plan. Utterly ridiculous though that this is not recorded anywhere and my portal says that everything is overdue.
