What things took you far too long to realise was a, erm... "thing"?

Sorry for awkward title!

I never realised until a couple of years ago (I'm 52 😳) that at the ends of the tubes of foil, clingfilm etc, there are two little tabs you push in to "hold" the roll when you pulled it.

What other "things" can you teach this old dog?

This is a fascinating thread!

What happened?!

Ugh...this has been answered at least twice. Use your eyes and look.

AyrnotAir · 03/02/2025 22:56

That holding the shift key whilst hitting a letter on the keyboard makes it a capital letter. I've literally been hitting caps for years and have also worked in Admin for years and got higher Admin.

@DappledThings ever heard of the saying it's not always the words you say but the way you say them? Your replies are rather animated for a supposedly light hearted thread! If you get this uptight on the internet perhaps it's time to go to bed!

Have to say that as an observer to your back-and-forth with @DappledThings there you are the one who appears to be getting uptight. Looks like you are a little embarrassed at having your mistake pointed out to you 🤣

It took me a few weeks and a few poonamis to realise that the shoulders on baby vests allow you to pull them down... I've since seen it mentioned on here many times. I mentioned it to my sister in jest after she had her second baby and we were both horrified she didn't know this before....!

I had 3 DC and didn't know this until I became a grandparent.

What is it then? And where does the lost luggage go instead?!

Lost property...

mirrorglitterball · 03/02/2025 23:02

That the velux sky light windows flip all the way round and then have a little catch to hold it in place so you can clean the outside! Had no idea til seeing a TikTok.

Except money is not spelt with a u, so I maintain it still makes no sense 😂

It is in Latin, though. It comes from ‘munera’ which means (amongst other things) a gift or recompense.

wordler · 03/02/2025 23:20

That Eeyore in Winne the Pooh is the sound a donkey makes.

I just had to look at a map to confirm this! That is NOT where I thought NZ was 😂

I'm sitting here rather amused that so many MNers don't actually know where NZ is 😃Maybe it's because it's not uncommon for us to be left completely off maps!

That it is remuneration, not renumeration.

I was about 40 before I realised that. I considered myself well read! And I was, really, I just hardly ever saw that word written down anywere and if I saw it in a work document or something assumed it was a typo. I still secretly think it's a typo from waaayy back, which has somehow stuck. 😆Because numeral, numerator, numeracy. I mean, stand to reason the letters got switched round, right?!

That buffalo mozzarella is made from buffalo milk?! I thought it was a way of making mozzarella not the ingredient!

Whaaaaaaat?

That Jail and Gaol are pronounced the same way.

Early 40s, and I hadn't realised that it wasn't pronounced with a hard G, and was the exact same word as Jail.

This!!

It's also further south than a lot of people realise, not at all like Australia climate-wise, we found it quite chilly in their late Summer. Looking in estate agents windows in NZ we saw 'lovely North facing garden' which puzzled us at first until the penny dropped!

Late summer is not usually chilly in NZ, you must have been here in a bad year (although this year summer is a write-off altogether in some parts of the country, unfortunately including where I am).

Continuing the household then, you can remove your kitchen sink plug strainer with a flat head screwdriver. If you dare.

OH DEAR, 😷

I did that. Not for the faint hearted and especially if you throw away a lot of cold black coffee.

Years ago we were told it was North east west south.

By who? the Chuckle Brothers?

On parking signs what no return in 2 hours meant. I thought it meant if you stayed for two hours (over the parking time) your car would be towed. DS1 explained that one to me.

When I was a kid I thought you couldn't go back to your car before 2 hours. I thought it was to stop all the inconvenience of the to-ing and fro-ing! 😆

They definitely do!

flapjackfairy · 03/02/2025 23:46

the one that blows my mind( and I only realised my mistake when I was on a similar thread ) but when you say something like " if you think.i am going to do that you have another THINK coming ".
All my life I have said you have another THING coming.
I still can't say it right and it won't compute in my brain at all.

PickledPup · 03/02/2025 23:50

That you don't peel the foil off Oxo cubes and crumble it with your fingers.

You pull out the corner flaps then flatten it with your thumb whilst in the foil so it becomes 'pillow' shaped. You then squidge the sides. You then tear off a small corner and pour the granules in.

Years getting it under fingernails until I learnt that one 😂

Edited to add - it's basically a pourable pouch

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/02/2025 23:53

I don't think this has always been a thing. I first heard of this when Ant and Dec said it a few years back on I'm a Celeb. It's pretty stupid, because if it's something which goes in a full circle, as soon as you're looking at it from quarter past three (or 90 degrees) it's moving left. But it's tightening it. It's only when you start at 12 o'clock position that the lefty lucy crap works.

I don't know what's wrong with clockwise and anti clockwise, but then I suppose this marks me out as old and understanding what analogue clocks are, as opposed to having only been brought up with digital.
