What things took you far too long to realise was a, erm... "thing"?

Sorry for awkward title!

I never realised until a couple of years ago (I'm 52 😳) that at the ends of the tubes of foil, clingfilm etc, there are two little tabs you push in to "hold" the roll when you pulled it.

What other "things" can you teach this old dog?

Yes but I take advantage of those numpties everyday and happily go down the outside lane of the queue and just merge in. Saves me a lot of queuing time 😂 I really like it when people try to sit across two lanes to block it as there’s usually still space to get past, there was a VERY angry woman who tried to do that to me a couple of weeks ago, all I did was wave, no idea why she was so worked up.

Yes people not letting you in but then becoming stuck behind a bus at a bus stop so one can sail past with a cherry wave!
Don’t get me started on box junctions.

Instead of un popping the bottom bits and pulling the poo covered baby grow/vest over their head, pull the neck of the vest down over their shoulders, towards their legs (the envelope fold allows this), no poo near mouth/nose/ears/eyes.

Even better, get the french style side opening vests. They're brilliant. I'm in ROI but have just ordered a bunch in the next 3 sizes up from H&M for baby girl. I hate putting vests on and off over head, poonami or no.

Why can't it be true? Buffalo are basically just cows.

It just seemed not true to me maybe because I associate buffalos with the USA. Anyway it is true.

I loved doing this as a child in the 70s!

Always satisfying!

Also that we're all eating chocolate biscuits the wrong way up. Put the chocolate side facing your tongue, you get more out of the chocolate flavour that way.

This also works with crackers, as they usually have a bit of salt on ‘top’, so they taste better upside down as well.

Late summer is not usually chilly in NZ, you must have been here in a bad year (although this year summer is a write-off altogether in some parts of the country, unfortunately including where I am).

It was way back in 2006, I recall sitting on a beach in shorts and t-shirt and being mocked, nicely, by Aussies in thick coats etc.. Whatever the weather though it was a wonderful holiday.

It's called a zipper merge in America.

And in Germany, there was never a problem merging two lanes.

Took me ages to realise that something being 'a thing' was 'a thing'. I used to think Of course it is a thing, but what about it?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 04/02/2025 13:17

Baby wasn't even in a corner, she was against a pillar. Why don't people talk about this!!!? Technically her back is into a corner created by the pillar but I would not refer to it as a corner as such. I only noticed this a few weeks ago.

StrawberryHoney · 04/02/2025 17:21

Following on from the Italian Bufala / Buffalo thing. Discovering that Al Fresco in Italian is slang for prison and in Italy you get very odd looks in restaurants asking if you eat your Mozzarella al fresco 😳

I don't get the baby vest thing. It's 30 years too late for me anyway, at least until/if I have grandkids but surely with a poonami you just strip 'em off and put them under the shower?

On the fuel filler indicator issue, it's sort of irrelevant as, brace yourselves, the hoses STRETCH. Unless you are parked a silly distance from the pump or are driving an artic the hose will reach to the opposite side of the vehicle. No more queueing for the pump on the right. Gaily cruise up to the left hand pump, pull it out and smugly stick it into your opposite side filler hole (ooh-er missus), pay and carry on your way while drivers waiting for the "right side" pump are still queuing.

Happy trails!

Deleted as this was answered on page two.

I am very embarrassed about this but I thought when you had a c section they took out everything and I wouldn't bleed afterwards. 6 hours after my oldest was born I went for a shower and this big clot of blood came out, I genuinely thought I was either having another baby or I was dying. I buzzed for a midwife and she had to stop herself from laughing at me. I was 23.

I think it's a building standard in Scotland that upstairs windows need to be cleaned safely from inside the property so tilt and turn windows are very common.

Tilt and turn windows are all very well if you don’t want windows really wide open sometimes, e.g. in summer.

I didn’t know this, either, until your post! 😳😂

Some windows, common in Germany but never caught on here, can open in two ways, they are hinged at the bottom and open that way or they can be opened from the side, inwards, great for cleaning. I have one in a room upstairs, I can leave it 'open' hinged at the bottom with no worry about security.

Sounds like tilt and turn, which you do find in the UK but they’re not as popular as sash or casement - windows that can be opened really wide.

The tiny arrow on the petrol indicator level on your car telling which side it is on. Found that well into my 30s.

I was well into my 40s before realising this. I'd been driving about 30 years by then 😁

When you started driving though it wouldn't have been a thing and it's not universal even now, didn't Top Gear do something on it, I have a very vague memory of that.

But as has already been pointed out it's not really that vital as pump hoses will reach either side, unless you're driving a van or huge car

That the outside of the tomato puree lid can be used to break the foil lid of the tube, there's like a teeny Philips screw but in there!

Like some tubes of toothpaste

The my oven door glass slides out for cleaning .
On the same theme. My windows pivot inwards for cleaning.
Probably because I only attempt either thing once a year.

Really?? Even integrated ones?? Have always tried to wipe the inside and outside and never makes a difference to cleanliness. This must be why!

Noparticularplacetogo · 04/02/2025 22:41

On the poonami vest thing - meh, he's 30 and still alive but I'll remember it for if/when he has kids ("well it never did you any harm").

My own Microsoft one is I was moaning to a colleague that you had to click off your e-mail in Outlook to open the calendar. She looked at me strangely for a second then said "you just right click and open in a new window". I felt a right numpty.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean but right click to open in a new tab is universal isn't it? It's not an outlook thing

Mozzarella comes from Water Buffalo which is different from American buffalo (which are actually bison) There is also an African buffalo. animals.mom.com/kinds-buffaloes-there-5307.html
