So much dog poo - what can be done?

AntiDogPooBrigade · 03/02/2025 09:36

Fines aren't working. Dog wardens are nowhere to be seen. Increase in dogs has meant a huge increase in the amount of poo on our pavements and in our parks. I am beyond fed up of it.

We need to do something. But what?

And before the dog people pile on saying it's only the minority, it's only a few, they've never seen dog poo on the pavement, I attach EIGHT photos from this morning alone, that I took on a small stretch of road where my DC go to school. I have reported this street to the council, as it is prolific here, and they cleaned it on Friday. So all this poo is fresh from sometime after Friday afternoon, to now. And it is not just one dog.

Dog nappies. It should be illegal to shit on the pavement or verges. People do not do it, babies don’t. Why is a dog allowed to, just because it is partially picked up. It is with a human, the human can sort out the nappy.

Yes, I know foxes and birds do it, but they are wild. Dogs aren’t and tbh I really don’t see why I should be inconvenienced by other peoples pets.

I would actually like to live somewhere better than a dog shit environment.

cheeseandcoleslaw · 03/02/2025 13:05

Shit absolutely everywhere round here too. It makes me furious ! And I'm sorry but when I see my neighbour in her mobility scooter dragging the dog alongside her, I think you are definitely one of those responsible !

towelsandsheets · 03/02/2025 13:12

DNA testing whereby the fines covered all costs could be made to work

I’m a dog owner who cleans up after my own dog and will also pick up any other poo I come across on our walks as it is disgusting to just leave it there. I think it is lazy owners especially after dark who think they can get away with it. During the day when other people are around I don’t see other dog owners leaving it in the area I live in but still manage to pick up after several dogs every time we go for a walk. My family call me the poo police

GreenTeaLikesMe · 03/02/2025 13:18

Systems of registration can only work if you are OK with a much higher level of surveillance in society - for example, creating a system where police officers frequently stop people and demand the right to pass their scanner over the dog and check for a chip (and remove the dog for impounding or even euthanasia if a chip is not found). I mean, I personally wouldn't care, not least as I don't have a blinking dog anyway. But the "We are not a Papers Please society!!!" nutters would be up in arms.

WattleTyler · 03/02/2025 13:34

I think owners should wash it away with a bottle of water, ideally with some kind of bleach or whatnot too.

Please don’t suggest pouring bleach on paths. It will then get into gullies and in rural areas, drainage ditches and water courses.

EXACTLY!! I would looooove to get a cute fluffy cuddly dog but I don't want to contually pick up poo so I don't get 1!!

If only everyone had this attitude there wouldnt be an obstacle course of shit to avoid when you go out. It's 100% pure selfishness 😡

AntiDogPooBrigade · 03/02/2025 14:09

Had to pop to the postbox just now, a two-minute walk. Encountered three dog poos within a couple of hundred metres. One was even bagged.

I have again reported to the council. This is a tedious process. They will come and clean it (poor lowly-paid worker), and it will just keep happening.

I am ok with surveillance, sadly I think the oiks have made it a necessary evil.

I get that. Something then, some kind of detergent that will make it a bit more sanitary and stop our kids going blind.

I refuse to take FIL's dog for a walk for this exact reason. His shits are horrendous. Big dog = big shit that quite often needs two poo bags to deal with. And they absolutely stink!

I took my DPs dog for a walk not long ago and it was much more acceptable!

I said to DH the other week, I'd rather pick up the dead mice my cats bring me than FIL's dog's shit!

(And before anyone comes at me for my cats, I have the weirdest cats who have chosen their own garden as their toilet!)

AntiDogPooBrigade · 03/02/2025 09:56

I think we need to start with making it illegal to let dogs even crap on the pavement in the first place. WHY was this ever deemed ok? Paths should be off-limits too. Dogs need to be trained to go in their own gardens only, or a (paid for by a dog licence scheme) designated dog park. Even when people do pick it up, there are always bits left behind.

Then let's make it illegal for cats to shit in other peoples gardens as well then. They can't even go in their own.

What about horses? Should they wear nappies too 🤔

There’s a steaming pile of it on the road outside my house right now. If I could be bothered to go out, I’d shovel it up for the garden.

VelvetThrows · 03/02/2025 14:23

Unpopular opinion.

It's old people shuffling round the block at night with their dogs that don't give a shit (sorry) about picking it up.

Round here anyway.

towelsandsheets · 03/02/2025 14:34

Horse poo isn't as harmful to humans as dog poo though

Ah, another thread that could have actually been about an issue that both dog owners and non dog owners agree on has turned batshit

I am loving the updated photos of poo, OP 😂

theidiotswind · 03/02/2025 14:47

I totally understand the concern about blindness through dog's poo, especially for children however I also remember a good few years ago I was walking my dog in a bit of a 'dodgy' area, I picked up, went to the bin and a group of children asked for my bag-they were playing a game where they were getting bags of poo out of the bin to throw at each other. .....

How so?

I mean, not allowing dogs to toilet outside of their own gardens and having to call someone to clean up any residue is pretty wild. Plus, if some dog owners can't even be arsed to pick up the poo on their own then why would they ever go to those extremes?
How will we monitor cats so that the same things happen there? Or can they carry on shitting and weeing with wild abandon?
We've had people say that we shouldn't even be able to put it in bins - why? In my area you don't even need to find a dog poo bin, it can go in a standard bin - but suddenly we aren't allowed to even use them any more?
Then, my favourite bat shittery has been from the person who suggested that it should be 'put back in the dog or the owner should be made to eat it with a spoon'
People are so intolerant - 'why should I be put out by dog owners' well, no one particularly wants to be put out by anyone, but seeing as we live in a society where we aren't all going to agree on everything, we kind of have to put up and shut up rather than sending people to live on an island somewhere.
And that's not me saying that we should put up with people picking up after their dogs, they should - but then it would seem that's not even enough for some on this thread.

I don't think it is wild to suggest that if someone wants a pet, they should toilet it on their property and not inconvenience the rest of us with poo and piss everywhere. I think it is wild that we ever thought it was acceptable to let dogs poo and pee on pavements where we walk. I think we need to push for people to ensure their choices don't impact others negatively. Train the dog to pee and poo at home, OR, fund an area of a park where they can go. It should never be ok to let them do it on the pavement. We don't approve of humans doing it. Should be the same for dogs.

Perhaps cats should be indoor pets only.

The issue is, many people are not picking up after their dogs. We have tried asking, we have tried putting up signs, we have threatened fines, we have provided poo bins and free bags, yet the problem persists. I am absolutely at the end of my tether with it. EIGHT piles of dog shit in a small space, that is not a minority of dogs. It is clearly a problem. So we need to find a solution, and I am so far at the end of my tether with it right now, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that we:

licence every dog at birth
repeat licence fee every year
fees pay for dog wardens and street-cleaning
dog wardens fine on the spot, plus photograph offenders and name and shame
repeat offenders have the dog removed and banned from ever owning pets
cctv to shame offenders, paid for by licence fee

it is obviously not feasible to cart every dog off to an island, but we can dream!
