Booked extra seat on plane for large costume , how does it work at security ? a bit like taking cello on a plane I suppose.

HI all,

I'm flying to an event and have a large costume , I didn't want to risk it being damaged in the hold / lost so booked an extra seat on the plane. Seems excessive I know , but without the costume the trip isn't really worth it. Think Comicon , but not actually that.

I will, I presume, be carrying the costume through security. I think it will fit into the scanner for the bags but if it doesn't what happens ?

Also there are metal wires inside it they "can" be removed but it would be a pain.

Any ideas on what to expect ?

Should I talk with the airline / airport ahead of time ?

Does it have to be "strapped in" in the seat belt ?

Many thanks

Can only share experience of taking a large keyboard. It was too large for the normal scanners for hand luggage so we were escorted to another part of the airport with a larger scanner so you need to allow more time. We were asked to put the ticket in the name Mr musical instrument! It did have to be strapped in.
The airline should be able to advise.

Thank you , I will factor in more time , I think it's just "extra seat" ATM , I will have to give it a name 😁

Contact the airline.

You'll need to go through their processes; as otherwise, it's just an extra seat that won't check in - so may well be resold.

You'll be invited to take it to a larger scanner, usually, so I'd give yourself extra time at each airport, but it'll go with all the other oversized items.
