Tax rebates

Can anyone explain how this works? Recently filed my tax return and it determined I was owed a rebate. I duly applied online for the rebate to be paid to me.

Let's say the rebate is £2500. I've received a random payment of £468 into my bank account from HMRC. No email to explain the amount or say when I'll get the rest, and nothing in the app or on website to explain this either. There's no point calling HMRC as you can't ever speak to a human.

Is it that they're going to send a cheque for the rest?

Did you have a payment on account for 2024/25 and they have offset the refund against that leaving you with a small refund?

You should be able to check the position in your tax account.

Was it £2500 rebate or a rebate of tax on £2500 which could be £468.

Tax account info says £2500 in credit. And when I'd filed my return, a screen came up saying I had overpaid tax by £2500. So I don't think the £468 was tax on £2500. It's a bit of a mystery but I'd like the money!
