Where do you actually use bleach to clean around the house?

Just read the bleaching carpet thread. Quite roundly and rightly dismissed as an insane practice by MN.

So where do you actually use bleach around the home? Do you actually use bleach for anywhere other than the toilet?

Funnily just read the instructions on the bottle today. Was surprised at the uses, always thought it was just for the loo.

Will try whitening clothes as always use vanish, which is so expensive.

Toilet only
Dettol for work tops and steeping cleaning clothes in.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 02/02/2025 23:00

I've just googled bleach and mould. Bleach does kill mould, but not all types, and only what it can touch, so the mould can return on porous surfaces. Vinegar kills more types of mould than bleach, and more efficiently.
Wish I'd known that yesterday, I used bleach to treat a mouldy corner on my bathroom windowsill. Worked a treat, it's tiled, but I don't like using too much bleach.

I've tried vinegar on mould, did bugger all.

DairyLeanne · 02/02/2025 23:06

I have to say I would have presumed bleach would kill mould. I thought it kills everything.

I was a bit paranoid about the mould so actually I cleaned it off -as much as I could - with a disposable wipe. Then sprayed vinegar on it, the a few hours later bleached it!
I also googled it and I wasnt clear what was best, so I did both. Maybe I'll vinegar it again for good measure?

See this holds the same level fret for me as bleaching carpets. The thought of bleach on any fabric fills me with dread.

Down plughole and to clean the (stupid) white sink. If it were a butler or belfast sink it wouldn't need bleaching.
I also use it on mould in selected spots.

Loki64 · 02/02/2025 23:25

Ive used it on carpet.
I chose bleachable carpets when i got new carpets.
Grey carpet, if anythings spills i just dab bleach on it and it comes straight out. They still look like new 6 years later.

Haysamosa · 02/02/2025 23:33

The toilet mainly. Sometimes the shower cubicle tray. I think all those domestos tv adverts have certainly worked on me over the years. I steal a guilty pleasure over pouring bleach over all those toilet germs. I can almost sense their pathetic dying screams 😁

thrive25 · 03/02/2025 00:33

Just my Belfast sink every few weeks.

My understanding is bleach is one of the least eco friendly products you can use so am very sparing with it. Would use boiling water/another disinfectant as first line for most purposes, and use harpic not bleach for the loo (and this maybe once a week)

I don’t understand the reasons to put bleach down a lavatory regularly- why?

BeaAndBen · 03/02/2025 00:41

Diluted, to pre-soak the cleaning cloths in every few months.

Newmeagain · 03/02/2025 00:45

I use it very sparingly as a last resort. Mainly (Like other people) for my stupid white sink that gets stained and nothing else works on it. I use an eco toilet cleaner nearly always and only use a bit of bleach in the toilet every few months if looking stained.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 03/02/2025 00:45

Neat down the toilet and kitchen sink plug. Diluted to wipe toilet seat, rim and outside of loo. What do people clean those parts of the loo with if they don't use bleach?
Also use to clean cat litter tray and if cat has been sick on the floor. Use to clean outside bins about once a year and to clean out water butts once a year. If some disgusting person has let their dog shit on the pavement and I accidentally tread in it I clean the soles of my shoes with bleach. What would the non bleach people do in that circumstance?

What is a bleachable carpet?? Is it made of plastic fibres?

HoppingPavlova · 03/02/2025 01:02

Drains

Printedword · 03/02/2025 01:05

Diluted with water, keeps mould away in hard water areas

General surface cleaner on the external bits of the loo. I use toilet gel cleaner inside the toilet. That’s just for normal toilet use. If there is some sickness going around and people have been vomiting or diarrhoea then I use disinfectant on the external bits of the loo.

Also use to clean cat litter tray and if cat has been sick on the floor
I use disinfectant in this case.

Disinfectant.

RocketNan · 03/02/2025 01:18

I try not to buy it for environmental and respiratory reasons. I bought a steam cleaner and use that, along with white vinegar, bicarb of soda most of the time. It cleans the toilet beautifully.

Currently in battle with black mould on the bathroom ceiling. Having to use white vinegar.

Ladyof2025 · 03/02/2025 01:30

To those who say they use bleach to remove stains from cups. I used to do this, then I discovered that Elbow Grease sprayed on such a stain also removes it, and without the revolting bleach smell.

mathanxiety · 03/02/2025 01:34

I spray the grouting around the bathtub occasionally.

HeddaGarbled · 03/02/2025 01:35

When someone throws the dregs of their cup of tea dramatically into the kitchen sink without rinsing afterwards so there are stains splattered all over it 😡

LoserWinner · 03/02/2025 01:37

My flatmate cleaned the toilet seat with bleach. I now have burns on my bum :-(

Also, Steradent tablets work a treat.
