Where do you actually use bleach to clean around the house?

Just read the bleaching carpet thread. Quite roundly and rightly dismissed as an insane practice by MN.

So where do you actually use bleach around the home? Do you actually use bleach for anywhere other than the toilet?

Toilet, bathroom mildew, sometimes in a whites wash, mopping kitchen floor, and

washing plates and cooking utensils that have had egg on! Very dilute obviously, but it's the only thing that stops them getting a certain smell that isn't the smell of egg, but a smell that appears on plates that had egg on or a bowl used to make cake batter or pancakes only after they've been washed up. Most people don't notice it but I'm really sensitive to it - like if just one plate that had egg on goes in the dishwasher I can smell it on everything. I think it's a reaction between the egg white and the water or something. I guess I could not eat eggs, but I do actually like egg, and baking as well!

I'm sure bleach on eating equipment is a very bad thing but I've been doing it for 15+ years and seem to be ok so

Ah yes, I've been reminded now why I keep the bottle of bleach forever thanks to these replies.

From time to time you get that black stuff along the silicone sealant in your shower or bath.
Leaving a bit of neat bleach on it sorts it out like nothing else.

That's the only other thing I can think of.

PickAChew · 02/02/2025 22:34

About once a month in the toilet and around the grout and sealant even less when there is visible mould. DH is more inclined to use it than I am. Occasionally he uses it on our Belfast sink but I find that bicarb removes the stains left by the coffee that he doesn't rinse away properly almost as well.

Never really, unless there is a sickness bug in the house.

Who on earth would bleach their carpet?? I'm so glad that thread passed me by 😂

Where do I use bleach?
Toilet, maybe around the sink and the back of the taps.
I do have it in my home, so I don't oppose using it completely, but it's used sparingly.

Ha yeah I know it totally blows my mind even the thought of spilling or treading bleach into carpet let alone purposely using it.

Down the loo and DH sometimes uses it diluted to mop the bathroom floor when I think either he or DSs have had particularly poor aim....

zeddybrek · 02/02/2025 22:38

I only use it down the loo and black marks on shower sealant.

For those that use it to remove tea stains, those white sponges (Magic erasers?) are great at removing them without bleach. Same for turmeric and beetroot stains.

Down the toilet and sink plug holes.

This!

No other use for it.

DeepFatFried · 02/02/2025 22:40

Don’t use it, never buy it.
Don’t like the smell, worried about it bleaching stuff!

DurhamDurham · 02/02/2025 22:41

I found a load of mold recently in 2 bedrooms, so I bleached the heck out of that

Bleach doesn't get rid of mould it just bleaches it white and it'll come back with a vengeance. You need to kill the mould using white vinegar.

100PercentFaithful · 02/02/2025 22:41

We have a septic tank so can’t use it at all.

ThePuppyHasZoomiesAgain · 02/02/2025 22:42

Have used Astonish (I'm assuming it's a type of bleach?) on the odd but very rare occasion that the tea cups and spoons have looked grubby. But we're pretty good at washing up quickly or putting stuff in the dishwasher so I don't think I've used it since we moved house (just over 2.5 years ago).

Isthisrealomgwow · 02/02/2025 22:45

Add to the white wash for school t shirts

DairyLeanne · 02/02/2025 22:48

Ok so mainly the toilet it seems. I'm the same. The toilet seems to still have some sort hold some sort of final bleach frontier on me.

Toilet and shower. People are saying it's terrible for the environment and I'm not saying it's great but our tap water (West Yorkshire) is so highly chlorinated that I have to buy bottled water for drinking.

Normallynumb · 02/02/2025 22:50

Just the toilet
For tea/ coffee stained mugs I use bicarbonate of soda on an old, dampened toothbrush

Spicykitten · 02/02/2025 22:51

I clean my entire bathroom with bleach and a drop Fairy liquid. I also use it to my kitchen surfaces and kitchen sink sometimes, but I use Astonish disinfectant most of the time.

Purif · 02/02/2025 22:52

Shower tray, toilet, sinks and the overflow drain thing on the sink/bath, I try not to use too often as we have a septic tank, but sometimes needs must.

Round the windows, and in a couple of corners.

Bleach does nowt for mould but hide it. As pp said white vinegar is your friend to actually kill it.

OneLilacGuide · 02/02/2025 22:55

Toilet and plug holes every so often really.

I used to use it to clean the kitchen bin but it never really took the smell away, I’ve recently found Zoflora works better.

If anyone has a better way to clean skid marks I’d be interested to hear!

HollyBerryz · 02/02/2025 22:55

Never use it really so the last bottle I bought has been around a while. I did use it on my carpet to get out a lily pollen stain though.

Theunamedcat · 02/02/2025 22:56

Around the toilet I have a sen ds he likes to dirty protest it's the only thing that gets it clean

tiaa54742025 · 02/02/2025 22:56

Toilet , occasional sanitising of dish cloth, sink, and counter, and always after preparing fresh meat using a plastic meat chopping board.

Sunshineandblueskysalltheway · 02/02/2025 22:58

Toilet
Sink
Draining board
Washing machine

StormingNorman · 02/02/2025 22:58

I only use bleach in the loo. This thread is amazing though! Would it get rid of the orange stains on Tupperware?
