Can you do long division?

Attempting to help dd with her 11plus homework and feeling more and more stupid by the minute. Could you work out 324 divided by 4 with only pen and paper? No cheating and you must show your work, not just write the answer!

Yes

Noperope · 02/02/2025 19:36

324 divided by 7, not 4 🤦‍♀️ told you I was stupid...

Yep, bus stop.

No calculator? Easy!

I'd just ask Alexa....

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 02/02/2025 19:37

No, but luckily I don't ever need to!

NotMoreBadNews · 02/02/2025 19:37

Yes, I'd divide the 300 then the 24. I am a grown adult though (so I'm told 😂) and not an 11 year old.

Housebuy1 · 02/02/2025 19:37

I can do it in my head…

NotMoreBadNews · 02/02/2025 19:38

Oh my answer was when I thought we were dividing by 4.......

Floralnomad · 02/02/2025 19:38

Yes , I can do that one in my head .

bouncingbackhome · 02/02/2025 19:38

Yes, bus stop. It’s not really long division.

Noperope · 02/02/2025 19:38

Hercisback1 · 02/02/2025 19:36

Yep, bus stop.

I was definitely taught that at school because I got a B in Math but totally forgotten how to do it. Even watching YouTube videos isn't bringing it back to me.

Again…yes

EBearhug · 02/02/2025 19:39

I can do 324/4 or 324/7 in my head. I'd need pen and paper to do 324/14 or 324/17 though. I can. I don't know if schools use the same method I was taught.

SlenderRations · 02/02/2025 19:39

That's probably because the current method being tidying is not the same as when you were at school

Noperope · 02/02/2025 19:39

Sorry not by 4! Even I can do that one in my head. But proper long division where you have to complete all the steps.

Nope! I did pretty well in A Level maths (about 100 years ago) but never got the hang of long division. All that stuff about carrying over, and remainders never sank in (and what's this bus stop others are posting about?)

Snorlaxo · 02/02/2025 19:40

Long division is 324 divide by 14

Caffeineneedednow · 02/02/2025 19:41

Yes but can't quite remember the correct format meaning they way I was thought but you generally go from the large end down.
7 x 40 = 280
7 x 6 = 42
280 + 42 = 324
Answer is 46

user2848502016 · 02/02/2025 19:41

Yes!

TheChosenTwo · 02/02/2025 19:41

Ahh yes I can but I use the bus stop method. But that’s not how they teach it anymore 😂 I had to get my head around it a few years ago and the method they teach first now is absolutely nonsensical! Okay it’s apparently
needed for greater depth understanding and true mastery but ffs just teach bus stop method and be done with it!
Same as when we were kids and were taught that to multiply by 10 you just stuck a zero on the end and now you’d be banished for saying those words out loud!! It’s all about place value blah blah blah. Yeah it is but give those kids who struggle a fighting chance ffs…

purpleme12 · 02/02/2025 19:42

No

I was never very good at maths.

So I think because of that I just forgot how to do a lot of it!!

MegTheForgetfulCat · 02/02/2025 19:42

Yes, downward arrows and all! Don't know if they still teach it like that, though.

Uyayu · 02/02/2025 19:42

No, I’ve always struggled with maths despite lots of trying, not sure what bus stop method is either!

Sunflowersanddaffodils · 02/02/2025 19:43

What does "bus stop" mean in this context? I've not heard of that. But then I am so old my maths qualification is O Level not GCSE!

mynameiscalypso · 02/02/2025 19:44

I did Maths + Further Maths for A level. Never got the hang of long division. I just do it in my head.
