How to lose weight?

lil328 · 02/02/2025 10:53

So during the week I don't eat till 5pm and then only between 5-10pm, I will have dinner and maybe a snack, but that's it.

During the weekend I do eat lunch and dinner and maybe snack more.
My BMI is 27.9 and I can't get it below 25.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm Autistic so I struggle with food due to sensory issues.

You need to eat 500 calories a day less than your TDEE, some one need to eat fewer than that.

YouFreakingFreaks · 02/02/2025 11:00

You can eat a lot of calories in those 5 hours, and snacks can be calorific, some meals could have more than a daily calorie allowance in them, it all depends on what you are eating, not when you are eating.
Try logging your food on My Fitness Pal or similar, it should show you where you are going wrong.

Strict calorie counting is the only thing that works for me. Doesn't matter when you eat, if you consume more calories than you expend, you won't lose weight.

What are you eating?

The issue with eating between 5pm and 10pm is you've no time to burn it off (assuming you're not a shift worker). There's an expression - breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper - ie eat more earlier in the day.

A fasting period between say, 7pm and midday the following day is recommended by some, with a reasonable lunch and a lighter meal at tea time. But it will all come down to WHAT you eating - the carbs fat and calories you consume - and how much exercise you are taking.

I'm also autistic and found that losing and maintaining became my obsession. I don't know my bmi or weight as I think I might get too fixated so I go on clothes size. If my trousers start feeling tight I just tighten up a bit. I went from a 14/16 to a 6 and have maintained.
I do intermittent fasting (eat between 11 and 5.30 max) and calorie counting (I think this is the bit that helps the most). I changed one thing at a time. Even though I'm maintaining now I consistently log calories and stick to IF (although I am able to be slightly more relaxed when we go away/celebrations). I found the logging really useful at first as it's an eye opener to how many calories are in foods and meant I asked 'do I really need that?' or 'what alternative can I have?'
I think you have to do what's right for you and your lifestyle (I couldn't eat so late like you as it effects my gastric symptoms) but my friend finds that's the best time to eat like you.

That's a bad idea. I am trying two meals a day. No snacks. If you must fast then eat between 10 am and 6 pm. Eight hours eating 16 hours fast but the fast shouldn't be in the daytime.

5-10pm is too late, you’re going to bed with a full stomach

lil328 · 02/02/2025 12:01

I can't eat at work atm, the staff room is room much for me, and I'm not allowed to eat elsewhere due to infection control.
I mainly eat between 5-7pm.

I don't eat any fruit due to sensory issues, veg is more root veg, mushroom and onions.

Can you give an example of how much you would usually eat in your eating window?

Are you drinking enough water, getting enough sleep and movement?

DustyLee123 · 02/02/2025 13:04

You need to eat more or your body goes into starvation mode.
