It's a Georgian silver vinaigrette I believe

The markings appear to be ..

A ladies side profile, G U and then the lion symbol in the lid and then the anchor symbol, G U and J

I've googled but struggling to pin it down

Thanks in advance

Local auction houses sometimes organise valuation days where you can take stuff along and get it identified and valued.

The single J is the date letter, and it looks as if it could be the style of the letter J used for 1858 - this would fit with the sovereign head mark (otherwise called the duty mark, which was only used between 1784 - 1890) - I think the lady is Queen Victoria. The anchor is for Birmingham, but I'm sure you know that! The other letters are makers' marks, which show which jeweller made the piece (there are dozens of them - sometimes they are really hard to track down!)

I'm not an expert; I'm just an interested amateur, so I could be wrong.

GU is the makers mark for George Unite.

PopcornSquirrel · 01/02/2025 16:24

I think this is probably made by George Unite, Birmingham. The woman's profile would be Queen Victoria, and the letter J indicates it was made in 1858.
