Do you have fresh flowers in your home?

I've got a couple of bunches of daffodils and tulips around the house.
I don't seem to be too fussed about it other than during January and February as it cheers up the long dark gloomy days.

Always. I have a fireplace mantle that really suits a vase of flowers.

Daffs and Tulips at this time of year (but not in the same vase - they don’t like each other and the tulips kill the daffs). Also growing Hyacinths in a pot in the kitchen and in the garden. Roses in summer / autumn. Winter display with fir in the … um… winter!

I adore fresh flowers. Boggled that some ‘hate’ them. No judgement - just bafflement!

I never knew that about tulips and daffs in the same vase and that would explain why mine died so quickly. Thank you for mentioning this and I won't do this again.

I do have flowers in the house occasionally. I love daffodils this time of year, and used to love to buy a bunch of freesias but they are no longer scented from the shops and I've yet to try growing them in my garden.
I like getting roses, but not very often anymore as I have several plants in my garden, most are scented, and I'll occasionally bring some in the house.
I have a bright yellow chrysanthemum bought reduced for £1.85 as it was looking a bit sad. Just needed a good drink. Much cheaper than a bouquet and will last infinity longer.

No, absolutely loathe flowers. Don't have fake ones either.

When people give me flowers I give them to my mum!

I have never come across this before. How/why do you loathe flowers? What is it about them? Genuinely interested.

QueryA · 01/02/2025 13:23

I adore flowers. However I feel guilty buying them too often at the supermarket. Just because it’s so wasteful financially and also environmentally. Trying to grow more in my garden. I also have lots of house plants but they are not as cheerful as flowers

A friend of mine loathed cut flowers in the house but tbh she loathed them growing in the garden too.

It made buying a token birthday gift so much more tricky.

I love having flowers around my home but I wrestle with the idea of ‘killing them’ just to make my home look (and smell) nice. So instead I have good quality silk fake flowers instead (and use a Neom diffuser for scent).

I’m the ultimate killer of plants so they’re not an option.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 01/02/2025 13:51

Sometimes have a bunch knocking about. I wait for them to die and take photos of them. We have a cat now though and I'm not sure which ones are safe for him.

Ancient Chinese proverb - if you have two eggs, sell one and buy a flower
as the Soul needs feeding too

I love this! I’d never heard it before. Such a good metaphor for so many things.

WeeOrcadian · 01/02/2025 13:56

No

But I have a tonne of plants instead 🌵

evtheria · 01/02/2025 13:58

Seagullsandclouds · 01/02/2025 08:43

Usually yes, but only when they are cheap (a couple if pound). I can’t really justify the £7-£15 ones unless they are for someone’s else.

Yes, same.
I'll buy lots of a cheap flower (eg baby's breath) to give a dramatic effect, or buy yellow sticker bouquets. Get nicer, 'proper' ones on my birthday etc from DP and family.

My lottery dream includes a fortnightly subscription to a great florist with uncommon flowers, like Arena Flowers or flowerbx. I'd also have a cut flower garden, so basically my home would be an allergy-sufferer's worst nightmare.

Hre · 01/02/2025 13:58

Never, I cba with the faff of it, I have some cacti though.

LaPalmaLlama · 01/02/2025 13:58

Yes but only in Jan-Apr as I love daffodils and tulips are my absolute favourite- have lots of tulips in tubs outside too but they wont put in an appearance till about April.

TherealmrsT · 01/02/2025 13:59

Daffs now because it would have been GM birthday last week and she used to be given them so I usually have a bunch around now.
I grow sweet peas for the summer and sometimes buy myself a bunch of carnations or seasonal flowers in supermarket if they appeal.

Floralnomad · 01/02/2025 14:01

My son often buys me flowers but that’s the only time I have them , I’m not bothered about getting them myself .

FunnysInLaJardin · 01/02/2025 14:04

Yes, I love flowers, although less so in the summer when there are lots of flowers in the garden and we spend lots of time outside

DeanElderberry · 01/02/2025 14:04

Usually. At this time of year often just a tiny bunch of snowdrops or early primroses on the dining table. Later in the year I'll sometimes supplement my own garden flowers with stuff from the countrywomen's market - again, traditional garden flowers grown locally. Though I'll have few weeks soon when I buy Irish daffodils before my own come in. I love walking round the garden with a secateurs selecting things in colours and sizes that will go with each other and with particular vases or containers. And I love bright red tulips in the middle of winter.

Elphame · 01/02/2025 14:05

No. Having looked into the environmental impact of the cut flower trade, I no longer buy them.

Beebumble2 · 01/02/2025 14:08

Always and loads of plants as well. I try to buy home grown flowers or just pick them and greenery from my garden.

Hotafternoon · 01/02/2025 14:12

Always daffs this time of year. They have a very unique smell and I always think spring is just weeks away when I have them in the house, they are so cheerful looking.

I love them. ❤️

ediepop · 01/02/2025 14:14

Yes! Especially this time of year. Currently a tiny bunch of white tulips, another vase of daffodils, a bowl with white hyacinths, I've been forcing and another vase with a few stems of those huge Japanese chrysanthemums. They are left over from a gorgeous bouquet DH bought me for my birthday a couple of weeks ago.
I also love those pots of tiny daffodils can get in the supermarket this time of year. Only £2 and they are so pretty and spring like.

Readmorebooks40 · 01/02/2025 14:15

Yes, every couple of weeks I buy myself £5/£6 roses from Tesco. They usually last a couple of weeks and look pretty. I've a few plants dotted around the house too.

Milliways · 01/02/2025 14:20

Yes, but because I had an operation so have been bought 2 vases full,

DeanElderberry · 01/02/2025 14:22

Potted bulbs are often a very good bet, and can be planted out into the garden afterwards to give years more enjoyment - it not as early in the year.

VenusClapTrap · 01/02/2025 14:23

Yes. I collect and show daffodils, so I always have a vase of them in the kitchen through the spring. Before my own get properly going I often buy the odd bunch - always British ones though. I like to support our bulb growers; most are family farms who have cultivated bulbs for generations and have an incredible wealth of horticultural knowledge.

For those of you who don’t buy flowers because you don’t like the idea of the plant dying - maybe it would help to know that some plants benefit from having their blooms cut. When bulbs have their flowering stem removed, instead of the plant putting its energy into turning the spent flower head into seed, it puts its energy back into the bulb, which results in better flowers next year and the bulb getting large enough to divide and create a new plant.

Similarly, cutting roses is basically pruning, which strengthens the plant and encourages it to repeat flower.

Sweet peas need to be cut regularly to prevent the plant going to seed, and then expiring. You can keep a sweet pea plant going most of the summer if you are diligent at cutting.

caringcarer · 01/02/2025 14:25

I often do but ATM only Lego flowers.

Arran2024 · 01/02/2025 14:27

Yes. I get Feddies Flowers delivered. Love them.
