Weird casino account in my name

So tonight I have had an email welcoming me to grosvenor casino and a text to my mobile phone confirming the account .
I thought it was a scam so googled the website , then put in my email and asked for a password reset email. Using that I could change password and log in to the account in my name. The password email was addressed to me using my first name. So it's a real account. There's no money in it and it was set up a few hours ago.
I don't understand how a scammer could have my email, mobile , first name and presumably access to my email to verify the account originally.
Will contact them in morning as no one available now but wondered if this was some odd scam I don't know about ?

Do you have a partner/husband/child who may be using your details to open a casino account? I wouldn't have logged in had I received that email. You can ask a casino or bookies to block you and or set a limit on how much you can spend so it would doing so to stop anyone else using this account in your name.

No , have checked with ds , he is helping me look in to it . Dh away but def not him.
I didn't click on any links from the email.
I googled the website on another device, it's a legitimate website. Then logged in via website using the forgotten password link.
I thought I should at least change the password and see if they had done anything with the account.

I've logged in and self excluded myself for five years, so that email and mobile can't be used for five years . Makes me feel a bit better.

Do also change your email password if you haven’t already. And keep changing it regularly.

Change your email password too, and make it log itself out on all devices - I can't see why someone would use your email address and phone number unless they had access to the email to manage the account.

Yes that was my concern. Ds said maybe if they opened it at a physical branch ?
Will sort email password asap, only dh can do it and he is in a
Different time zone which is unhelpful !

I think that might be your answer...

Why does someone else have your email password?

3smallpups · 02/02/2025 22:31

@NigelHarmansNewWife do you mean why does Dh have my email password? If so it's because he is an IT professional and everything is on some server thing. No one else has it .

Customer support was pretty hopeless but account been blocked and forwarded to fraud team.I think , though they didn't seem to know, that there is no email verification. You just make the account, then verify it by sending documentation in.

How did you get the email if it wasn't quite the same?
